An 82-year-old woman has died following a physical altercation triggered by a domestic land dispute in the Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the village of Bariakanda, plunging the local community into shock and drawing attention to the escalating nature of familial property disputes in rural areas.
The deceased has been identified as Rezia Khatun, the widow of the late Kazimuddin. According to local residents, simmering tensions over family land had plagued the household for a considerable period. Verbal sparring and heated exchanges had become commonplace among family members residing on the homestead. On the fateful afternoon, a fresh argument erupted over a plot of land adjacent to their residence, swiftly escalating from a war of words into a physical confrontation.
Eyewitnesses and neighbours reported that during the heated dispute, Rezia Khatun was shoved by her son, causing her to lose her balance and crash to the ground. She fell severely ill almost immediately following the fall and passed away at the scene within a short span of time.
Upon receiving information about the tragedy, a team from Haluaghat Police Station rushed to Bariakanda village. Officers recovered the body and subsequently dispatched it to the district morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination. As part of the preliminary inquiry, police detained the victim’s son, Dulal Mia, and his wife, Hosne Ara, for questioning.
Neighbour Saidul Islam noted that domestic friction between the elderly woman, her son, and her daughter-in-law was a regular occurrence in the household. The fatal confrontation was merely the culmination of protracted disagreements regarding property boundaries and ownership rights.
Local law enforcement authorities have exercised caution, emphasising that the exact cause of death and any direct culpability can only be established conclusively following the autopsy report and a thorough investigation. The incident has not yet been formally classified as either homicide or accidental death by investigators.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ferdous Alam of Haluaghat Police Station confirmed that the body has been retrieved and sent for an autopsy. He stated that the two detainees are currently undergoing interrogation to shed light on the exact sequence of events that transpired leading up to the tragedy. Further legal steps will be initiated based on the forensic findings and evidence gathered during the probe.
Land disputes and property fragmentation frequently serve as catalysts for domestic friction and violence across rural communities in Bangladesh. Small disagreements over ancestral plots often simmer for years before boiling over into physical altercations, frequently leaving vulnerable elderly family members caught in the crossfire. As the investigation in Haluaghat continues, the community awaits definitive answers from the ongoing police inquiry and medical examination.
