Escapee Woman Suspect Rearrested in Keraniganj

Police have rearrested a woman who escaped from police custody after breaking through a metal grille at Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station. The suspect, Hasina Begum, 35, was detained during a raid at a house in the Jianagar area under Keraniganj Model Police Station in Dhaka at around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Hasina had escaped from temporary police custody at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Thursday after breaking the grille of a room where she had been held. She is the daughter of Habi Hawlader of Thanatali in Madaripur municipality and the wife of Al-Amin of Kalaimara in Madaripur Sadar Upazila.

According to police and local sources, officers from the Itterpool Police Outpost detained Hasina on Thursday night over allegations of involvement in anti-social activities. She was later taken to Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station. As the station’s main building is currently under construction, police operations are being conducted temporarily from the ground floor of the Officer-in-Charge’s official residence. Since the temporary facility does not have a designated holding cell, she was kept under police supervision in a room on the veranda.

Investigators said she took advantage of the situation during the early hours of the night, broke the metal grille and fled from custody. The escape triggered an immediate search operation, with officers attempting to trace her movements using both field intelligence and technological surveillance.

Police later received information on Friday night indicating that Hasina had travelled to Dhaka after fleeing. After confirming her location through information technology-based tracking, a team from Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station conducted an operation in Keraniganj and successfully rearrested her.

She was brought back to Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. About an hour later, she was produced before a court, which ordered that she be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.

Sub-Inspector S.M. Shahariar of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station confirmed the development to our representative. He said a separate case had been filed against Hasina Begum for escaping from lawful police custody and that legal proceedings were continuing.

The escape has also prompted an internal inquiry within the police force. On Friday afternoon, authorities formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Sadar Circle) Fariha Rafiqna. The committee has been instructed to submit a comprehensive report within three working days, examining the circumstances surrounding the escape, any security lapses and possible negligence by officers on duty.

Meanwhile, Police Superintendent Md Habibur Rahman has withdrawn Sub-Inspector Ramzan Ali and another police officer from their duties over allegations of negligence. Both officers have been attached to the district police lines while the departmental inquiry remains underway.

Escapes from police custody are treated as serious security breaches under Bangladesh’s law enforcement procedures. Investigators are expected to determine whether operational shortcomings or failures in supervision contributed to the incident, with further administrative action likely to depend on the findings of the inquiry.
