A farmer has been found dead under suspicious circumstances inside an irrigation pump house in the Umorpur area of Baro Alampur Union under Pirganj Upazila in Rangpur district. Police recovered the body on Thursday morning after the incident came to light.
The deceased, identified as Mofizar Rahman, was reportedly assigned to guard a Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) irrigation transformer at night, according to his family members and local residents. The discovery has prompted an ongoing police investigation.
According to family and local sources, Mofizar Rahman went to the irrigation pump house in the Umorpur field area on Wednesday, following his routine duty of guarding the BADC-installed irrigation equipment. He was responsible for monitoring the transformer used for agricultural irrigation in the locality.
On Thursday morning, a farmer named Shahidul Islam was passing through the area while taking cattle to the field. He noticed that the door of the irrigation pump house was open and the transformer unit appeared to have been tampered with or opened. Upon entering the premises, he discovered Mofizar Rahman lying inside with his legs tied and his body covered in blood.
Shahidul Islam immediately raised an alarm, prompting local residents to gather at the scene. The matter was subsequently reported to the police.
Police from Pirganj Police Station arrived at the site shortly after receiving information. They recovered the body from the pump house and initiated preliminary investigative procedures. Authorities have stated that the matter is being treated with seriousness and a full investigation is underway.
Locals have suggested that the incident may be linked to an attempted theft of the irrigation transformer. It is suspected that unidentified individuals entered the pump house during the night with the intention of stealing the equipment. According to these accounts, Mofizar Rahman may have been attacked and killed while trying to prevent the theft, after which the perpetrators allegedly fled with the transformer.
However, police have not yet confirmed the motive and are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
