Australia Make Change to Avoid Bangladesh Test Whitewash

Australia have made a change to their squad for the second Test against Bangladesh as they look to prevent a series whitewash after suffering a heavy defeat in Darwin.

The hosts were beaten by nine wickets in the opening Test, leaving Bangladesh 1–0 ahead in the two-match series. With the second and final Test set to begin in Mackay on 22 August, Australia have responded by dropping opener Jake Weatherald and recalling Matt Renshaw.

Weatherald struggled in Darwin despite being given an opportunity at the top of the order. He scored 23 in the first innings before being dismissed without scoring in the second. His failure to make a significant contribution has cost him his place in the squad for the decisive Test.

Renshaw, meanwhile, returns to the Test set-up after a lengthy absence. The 30-year-old batter last played a Test for Australia against India in 2023. His recall puts another experienced option into Australia’s top-order equation as the side attempts to recover from a disappointing opening match.

The change comes after Australia’s batting was exposed during the first Test. Bangladesh established a strong position with their first-innings performance, while Australia’s inability to produce substantial partnerships in their second innings left them with little room to recover. Once the visitors were set a modest target, Bangladesh completed the chase with nine wickets in hand.

The result has placed considerable importance on the Mackay Test. Australia must win to level the series, while Bangladesh need only avoid defeat to secure a series victory. For the visitors, another strong performance would turn an already significant Test win into a series triumph.

Australia’s selection also highlights the pressure on their top order ahead of the second match. Renshaw’s return gives the team another batting option, but the wider responsibility will remain with the established players to produce more substantial contributions. Players such as Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head will be expected to provide stability and runs in conditions where Australia cannot afford another collapse.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will enter the second Test with confidence after controlling the opening match. Their nine-wicket victory gave them an early advantage and put them within reach of a notable series success.

The second Test in Mackay will therefore carry different stakes for the two sides. Australia are fighting to keep the series alive, while Bangladesh have the opportunity to finish the contest with another strong performance and claim the series.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Matt Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Beau Webster.
