Firefighters Contain Blaze at Ibn Sina Pharmaceutical Plant in Gazipur

A major fire that broke out at an Ibn Sina Pharmaceuticals Limited facility in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila has been brought under control following a two-hour operation by emergency services. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, triggering an immediate response from local fire crews to prevent flames from consuming the multi-storey complex.

The blaze originated at around 4:00 pm on the ground floor of a six-storey building located in the Safipur area under Kaliakair Police Station. Workers first noticed smoke and fire coming from a storage room situated within the facility’s herbal production section. Plant personnel immediately alerted emergency services, with the first call received by fire officials at approximately 4:15 pm.

Two crews from the Kaliakair Fire Station were dispatched to the scene without delay. Given the potential risk of the flames spreading through the lower structure and reaching upper floors, additional reinforcement was promptly requested. Four more teams—two from the Konabari Fire Station and two from the Gazipur Chowrasta Fire Station—were deployed to bolster containment efforts.

In total, six fire-fighting units worked in unison to suppress the flames. According to Md Talha Bin Zasim, an official from the Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell, firefighters managed to fully control the inferno after nearly two hours of intensive work.

Ibn Sina Pharmaceuticals Limited is one of Bangladesh’s leading healthcare manufacturing companies, operating large-scale production facilities that process both modern allopathic treatments and traditional herbal medicines. Storage units within pharmaceutical plants typically house raw active ingredients, sensitive chemical compounds, and bulky packaging materials, making fire containment an imperative priority to avert critical industrial losses.

While emergency crews successfully neutralised the immediate threat, the underlying cause of the outbreak remains unconfirmed. Investigators are currently evaluating whether the incident stemmed from an electrical fault, a machinery malfunction, or another factor. Official evaluations are also underway to ascertain the full extent of structural damage and loss of raw materials or finished products.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with the incident. Authorities confirmed that a detailed investigation into the building’s fire safety systems and overall damage assessment will follow.
