Two people lost their lives on Saturday afternoon following a violent multi-vehicle collision involving a passenger bus, a pickup van, and a motorcycle on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. The fatal incident occurred in the Jamurki area of Mirzapur upazila, temporarily disrupting traffic along one of the country’s busiest transit corridors.
The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Asif, a motorcyclist from the Basail area of Tangail, and 40-year-old Abdul Rahim, a pickup van assistant hailing from Ullapara in Sirajganj. Both victims sustained critical injuries during the collision and died at the scene before medical assistance could be administered.
Eyewitnesses and police sources reported that a Dhaka-bound passenger coach operated by SI Travels was travelling along the capital-bound lane when the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The speeding bus initially rammed into the rear of Asif’s motorcycle before violently shunting it into a pickup van travelling directly ahead. The impact crushed the smaller vehicles, leaving little chance of survival for those caught in the middle.
Upon receiving emergency calls, personnel from the Gorai Highway Police Station rushed to the spot to secure the area and retrieve the bodies. Officers managed to clear the damaged vehicles from the highway, preventing prolonged traffic gridlocks that frequently plague the route following serious accidents.
Anisur Rahman, a Sub-Inspector at the Gorai Highway Police Station, confirmed that officers have seized both the passenger bus and the pickup van involved in the crash. The bodies were subsequently transported for standard medico-legal procedures. Police authorities confirmed that legal formalities are currently underway, after which the remains will be formally handed over to the grieving families.
The Dhaka-Tangail highway remains a notorious stretch for road accidents in Bangladesh, heavily burdened by high traffic volumes, heavy freight vehicles, and long-distance passenger coaches. Highway safety advocates consistently point to aggressive overtaking, driver fatigue, and reckless speeding as primary factors contributing to such tragic fatalities. An investigation has been launched to determine the precise circumstances that led the bus driver to lose control.
