Flooded Road Exposes Decades of Isolation

A deeply moving scene from a remote border village in Bangladesh’s Thakurgaon district has sparked widespread discussion on social media, highlighting the harsh realities faced by residents who have long struggled with inadequate rural infrastructure. A video showing family members carrying the body of an elderly woman through chest-deep floodwater to reach her burial site has drawn attention to decades of hardship caused by the absence of a permanent bridge.

The incident took place in Faldangi village, under Bakua Union in Haripur Upazila, after days of relentless monsoon rainfall submerged sections of the Faldangi–Nona connecting road. The flooded route, already vulnerable during the rainy season, became impassable for vehicles, leaving grieving relatives with no option but to carry the deceased through the water.

The woman, identified as 80-year-old Mofijan Bibi, died of age-related causes early on Thursday, 9 July. She was the mother of Nurul and Mofizuddin. Later that afternoon, as relatives prepared to take her body to the Rajiun Rahman Hafezia Madrasa ground for funeral prayers before burial, they encountered the submerged road. With the water reaching chest height in places, mourners carefully carried the body across the flooded stretch, a journey that reflected not only personal grief but also the community’s enduring struggle.

Residents say the absence of a bridge on the connecting road has been a persistent problem since Bangladesh gained independence. During the monsoon, the route becomes virtually unusable, forcing people to travel under dangerous conditions or take an alternative route that adds nearly six kilometres to the journey. While such detours are inconvenient for everyday travel, they become particularly distressing during emergencies such as medical crises or funeral processions, when every minute matters.

According to villagers, the lack of reliable transport infrastructure affects almost every aspect of life during the rainy season. Schoolchildren often find it difficult to attend classes, patients face delays in reaching healthcare facilities, and farmers struggle to transport agricultural produce to local markets. Essential daily travel also becomes increasingly hazardous as roads remain submerged for extended periods.

Local residents allege that promises to construct a bridge are frequently made during election campaigns but rarely materialise once voting has concluded. They argue that repeated assurances over many years have failed to produce lasting improvements, leaving the community to cope with the same seasonal hardships year after year.

In an effort to improve access, villagers recently pooled their own money, labour and resources to build a temporary earthen road. Their initiative briefly raised hopes of easier travel. Those hopes, however, were short-lived. Just two consecutive days of heavy rainfall were enough to submerge the makeshift road completely, returning the village to its previous state of isolation.

Community members believe that constructing a permanent bridge and upgrading the connecting road with durable engineering would transform daily life for thousands of people in the surrounding area. Such infrastructure, they argue, would not only improve transport during the monsoon but also ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare, education, markets and other essential services. It would also allow families to conduct funeral and burial rites with dignity, without being forced to navigate dangerous floodwaters.

Haripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Chandan Kar said he had watched the widely shared video and described the incident as deeply distressing. He acknowledged the need for a bridge on the affected road and assured residents that the matter would be given serious consideration, with the authorities aiming to take the necessary steps as quickly as possible. The incident has renewed calls for long-term investment in rural infrastructure, particularly in flood-prone border communities where seasonal isolation continues to affect both livelihoods and basic human dignity.
