Dawn Motorcycle Crash Claims Young Man’s Life

A late-night outing with friends ended in heartbreak when a young motorcyclist was killed in a road accident while returning to Dhaka from Munshiganj’s Mawa in the early hours of Friday. Another rider travelling with him sustained injuries after their motorcycle was reportedly struck by a speeding heavy vehicle on the First Buriganga Bridge near Postogola in the capital.

The deceased was identified as Humayun Kabir, 23, who worked at a grocery shop in Dhaka. His friend, Sohel, 22, suffered injuries in the collision and received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Hospital sources said his condition is stable and he is believed to be out of immediate danger.

According to their friend Manik Hawladar, a group of friends had travelled from Dhaka to Mawa on Thursday night for a leisure trip. The group used one microbus and two motorcycles during the journey. They spent several hours together enjoying the popular local delicacy, hilsa polao, before beginning their return journey to the capital shortly before dawn.

Humayun was riding one of the motorcycles with Sohel as his pillion passenger. As they crossed the First Buriganga Bridge in the Postogola area, witnesses and fellow travellers believe that a speeding truck or covered van approached from behind and struck their motorcycle. The force of the impact threw both riders onto the roadway, leaving them critically injured.

Friends travelling with them rushed to the scene and immediately transported the victims to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts, Humayun was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Sohel was treated for his injuries and placed under medical observation.

Inspector Md Faruk, who is attached to the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the two young men were brought to the hospital at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Friday. Following medical examination, doctors declared Humayun dead. His body has been kept in the hospital morgue pending the completion of legal formalities before being handed over to his family.

Family members said Humayun had been living in the Kalabagan area of Dhaka while working to support himself and his loved ones. His ancestral home is in Faridganj Upazila of Chandpur District, and his father is Mizanur Rahman Patowary. Relatives described him as one of the family’s earning members, making his sudden death an especially devastating loss. News of the tragedy has left his family, friends and colleagues in deep mourning.

Road crashes involving motorcycles continue to pose a significant public safety challenge in Bangladesh. Fatal collisions are particularly common during the early morning hours, when visibility may be reduced and high-speed freight vehicles frequently share major highways and bridges with smaller vehicles. Road safety specialists have long stressed the importance of observing speed limits, maintaining safe following distances, wearing appropriate protective equipment, and ensuring greater caution by drivers of heavy vehicles to reduce the risk of such incidents.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash to determine its precise cause. Law enforcement agencies are working to identify the truck or covered van believed to have struck the motorcycle before leaving the scene. Officials said appropriate legal action will be taken once the vehicle and its driver are traced.
