Law enforcement agencies have apprehended a former student leader in connection with political violence linked to nationwide student demonstrations. Sagar Islam Caesar, twenty-five, who previously served as the general secretary of the Sreepur Pourashava unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League in Tangail, was taken into custody by a specialized unit of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-5). The high-profile arrest took place on Monday evening directly outside the Natore Sadar Police Station, drawing significant attention from local observers and media outlets monitoring political developments across the region. In the wake of recent political transitions, security forces have intensified operations to track down figures linked to past civil unrest.
Initially detained in connection with a separate Cognisance Register warrant, law enforcement officials initiated a thorough background check and verification of his legal status following his apprehension. During this rigorous database screening, authorities discovered that Caesar was explicitly named as a listed suspect in a major criminal case registered at the Sakhipur Police Station. This specific case, bearing case number 03/08/2024, was filed in relation to the widespread violence, clashes, and public unrest that erupted during the historic anti-discrimination student movement. Investigators noted that his alleged involvement in orchestrating or participating in these violent crackdowns placed him under active surveillance by intelligence units.
Following the discovery, the Natore Sadar Police Station promptly communicated the development to their counterparts in Tangail. A dedicated investigative team from the Sakhipur Police Station was dispatched to take custody of the suspect. Officers have confirmed that Caesar was subsequently transported back to Tangail and is currently being held under strict security at the Sakhipur police holding cell pending further judicial proceedings. Local law enforcement officials indicated that he will be formally presented before a competent court as the legal process moves forward, while ongoing efforts continue to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the disturbances. Civil society members and victims of the clashes have expressed hope that comprehensive judicial proceedings will ensure accountability for all acts of violence committed during the turbulent period.
