Bangladesh Secure Direct Place at 2027 World Cup

Bangladesh have secured direct qualification for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, while West Indies face another difficult qualifying campaign after Afghanistan’s victory over Ireland in Belfast.

Afghanistan edged past Ireland by three wickets in a thrilling match, a result that confirmed their place among the teams that will qualify directly for the tournament. The outcome also ended West Indies’ hopes of breaking into the top eight of the relevant ICC ODI rankings before the qualification cut-off.

Under the qualification system, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings on 30 September this year will earn direct places at the 2027 World Cup. The number of automatic qualifiers will rise to 10 if hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe are both among those eight teams.

Alongside Afghanistan, the teams set to qualify directly include defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh, South Africa and Zimbabwe. For Bangladesh, the confirmation represents an important step towards the tournament, allowing the side to focus on preparation rather than having to navigate an additional qualification competition.

West Indies, by contrast, remain outside the automatic qualification places. They are currently ranked 10th and have two ODIs against India remaining within the relevant period. Even victories in both matches would not be enough to lift them into the top eight, meaning they will once again have to go through the qualifying route.

The situation is particularly significant given West Indies’ recent struggles in global cricket. They also failed to qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup and subsequently exited the qualifying tournament after finishing fifth in the Super Six stage. That failure resulted in their first-ever absence from a World Cup. They also missed the 2025 Champions Trophy, having last appeared in that competition in 2013.

The qualification process for the 2027 World Cup introduces a demanding route for teams outside the automatic places. The qualifying tournament is scheduled for February next year. Its winner will move directly into the second round of the World Cup, while the teams finishing second, third and fourth will enter the first round, known as the Super Series.

The team that finishes top of that first-round competition will then advance to the second round. The structure has already prompted concern among some associate nations because of the additional hurdles involved.

The qualifying tournament will feature the two lowest-ranked Test-playing nations according to the rankings on 30 September 2026. Ireland and West Indies are currently identified for those places. They will be joined by the top four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the four best sides from the World Cup Qualifier Play-off.

The play-off itself will involve the four lowest-ranked teams from League 2 and four teams from the Challenge League, which represents the third tier of the qualification structure. The exact format of that eight-team play-off has yet to be finalised, but four sides will progress to the main qualifying tournament.

The Challenge League will involve 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each group will play three rounds of round-robin competition, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the World Cup Qualifier Play-off.

For Bangladesh, the immediate concern is therefore no longer qualification but preparation. Direct entry provides the national side with greater certainty and removes the pressure of an additional qualifying campaign. For West Indies, however, the road to the 2027 World Cup has once again become considerably longer, with another high-stakes qualifying battle now unavoidable.
