Forty Killed in Lebanon Strikes

Israel has carried out fresh attacks in southern Lebanon, reportedly in violation of an existing ceasefire arrangement, leaving at least 40 people dead and 13 others injured, including children. The strikes took place on Saturday, 9 May, local time, according to Reuters.

The attacks targeted areas in southern Lebanon amid continuing cross-border hostilities between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah. During the operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued warnings ordering residents of nine villages in the affected area to evacuate. The warnings were issued as military activity intensified across parts of the border region.

Lebanese authorities reported that the casualties included civilians, while emergency teams continued rescue and medical operations following the strikes. No further breakdown of the fatalities or injuries was immediately released.

At the same time, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for more than 20 attacks against Israeli military positions. The group said it launched rockets, artillery shells and drone strikes targeting IDF positions and locations in several towns in northern Israel.

The IDF confirmed that three Israeli soldiers were injured in the attacks carried out from Lebanese territory. However, the Israeli military did not disclose additional details regarding the condition of the injured personnel.

The exchange of fire marks another escalation in the ongoing confrontation along the Israel-Lebanon border, where clashes have continued intermittently for months. Both sides have regularly accused one another of violating ceasefire understandings and escalating military operations in border areas.

Despite the renewed violence, diplomatic efforts are continuing. The United States Department of State announced that Israeli and Lebanese representatives are expected to participate in a new round of discussions in Washington on 14 and 15 May. The two-day talks are expected to address border security issues and efforts aimed at reducing tensions between the two sides.
