Police in Shahzadpur, Sirajganj, have arrested four people on allegations of taking part in a procession organised under the banner of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League. Authorities have since filed a case against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act and produced the suspects before a court on Wednesday, according to officials at the local police station.
Police sources said the incident took place at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday, 4 August, in Naluya village within Shahjadpur municipality. Officers reportedly launched an immediate operation after receiving information that a procession had been organised under the banner of the prohibited organisation. During the raid, four individuals were detained and later formally arrested.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Yamin Sardar, son of Mohammad Abdus Salam Sardar, and Mohammad Tawhid Islam, son of Mohammad Abdul Khalek, both residents of Naluya Uttarpara. The other two are Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, son of Mohammad Shukur Ali, from Naluya Madhyapara, and Mohammad Joy, son of Mohammad Mukdum Sardar.
According to police, the alleged public procession held in the name of a banned organisation was treated as a serious matter. Officers said they responded promptly after learning of the gathering, detained those present during the operation, and initiated legal proceedings under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The accused were subsequently sent to court after the completion of the required legal formalities.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Saiful Islam of Shahjadpur Police Station said police were maintaining regular surveillance and patrols across the upazila to preserve public order and ensure a stable law and order situation. He stated that any reports of organisational activities, public gatherings or processions allegedly carried out in the name of a banned organisation are acted upon without delay.
The officer added that, following the registration of the case, the four accused were produced before the court on Wednesday afternoon. The investigation remains ongoing, and police said further legal action would be taken if additional individuals are found to have been involved based on evidence gathered during the inquiry.
The arrests come amid continued monitoring by law enforcement agencies of activities allegedly linked to organisations that have been declared banned. Under Bangladesh’s legal framework, authorities may initiate action under relevant laws if individuals are accused of organising public programmes, rallies or other organisational activities in the name of a prohibited group.
In recent months, law enforcement agencies have conducted similar operations in different parts of the country after receiving allegations of activities involving banned organisations. Police maintain that such measures are intended to safeguard public security and uphold law and order. Whether further arrests or charges follow in this case will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and the evidence collected by investigators.
The allegations against the four accused will ultimately be subject to judicial proceedings, and the court will determine any criminal liability based on the evidence presented during the legal process.
