Four Arrested with Loaded Pistol Following Gang Clashes in Rupganj

Local law enforcement agencies have detained four individuals in connection with violent armed clashes between rival criminal factions in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila. Officers recovered a loaded foreign pistol during the operation, which follows a string of turf wars over illegal drug distribution networks in the area.
The arrests took place on Friday evening during a targeted police raid in the Tarabo Bazar area. Newly appointed Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Habibur Rahman formally briefed journalists about the development during a press conference held at the Rupganj Police Station at approximately 8:45 PM.
The suspects have been identified as 30-year-old Nazmul Hossain, 21-year-old Nihal Mia, 20-year-old Sajjad Hossain, and 24-year-old Shafiqul Islam.
According to police briefings, the locality has witnessed escalating tension due to a protracted territorial dispute between two local gangs known locally as the Srabon Group and the Nabi Group. Both factions have frequently vied for control over local drug syndicates, regularly resorting to armed processions, street fights, and aggressive confrontations that have left residents living in constant fear.
The latest cycle of violence peaked late Thursday night when members of both groups brandished lethal weapons and engaged in chaotic running battles across the neighbourhood. The situation grew sufficiently volatile to prompt a direct response from senior law enforcement officials. SP Habibur Rahman personally rushed to the scene alongside local police units to restore order and disperse the armed combatants.
Capitalising on the swift tactical response, police launched a special dragnet operation across Tarabo Bazar on Friday evening. Officers intercepted and detained the four suspects, all reportedly affiliated with the Nabi Group, recovering the loaded foreign pistol from their possession.
Authorities have confirmed that formal charges are being framed under the Arms Act at the Rupganj Police Station. The detained individuals are scheduled to be produced before the Narayanganj court under heavy security. Local policing units have pledged to maintain a strict posture against armed delinquency and territorial gang violence to safeguard community security.
