Four people, including a married couple and their eight-month-old daughter, were killed when a truck struck an auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle in Melandaha, Jamalpur, on Saturday morning. Several others were injured in the accident.
The collision took place at around 10am in the Baithamari Burunga area on the Jamalpur-Melandaha road. Three people died at the scene, while a fourth victim succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital.
The deceased were identified as Morshed Alam, 25, his wife Ikrama, 23, and their eight-month-old daughter, Rifa. The family were residents of the Indullamari area in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur. The fourth victim was identified as Shawkat Hasan Likhon.
According to local sources, an auto-rickshaw was travelling from Melandaha towards Jamalpur when a truck approaching from behind struck it. The impact also involved a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, which was caught in the collision.
The crash left several people injured and caused three immediate fatalities. Local residents rushed to the scene to assist with the rescue operation. Police arrived shortly after receiving information about the accident and helped recover the victims.
The injured were taken to Jamalpur General Hospital for treatment. However, Shawkat Hasan Likhon later died while receiving medical care, bringing the total death toll to four.
The deaths of three members of the same family have cast a shadow of grief over their community. The loss of an infant alongside her parents has made the tragedy particularly distressing for local residents. What began as an ordinary journey ended in devastating circumstances for the family.
Melandaha Police Station Officer-in-Charge ATM Mahmudul Haque confirmed the incident. He said police reached the scene after receiving information about the crash and rescued the deceased and injured. The truck involved in the accident has been seized.
The precise circumstances that led to the collision have not yet been established. Further examination of the incident will be necessary to determine how the truck struck the auto-rickshaw and how the motorcycle became involved.
The accident has once again raised concerns about road safety, particularly the risks faced by passengers travelling in smaller vehicles alongside heavy traffic. Auto-rickshaws and motorcycles offer limited protection in collisions involving large trucks, making careful driving, controlled speeds and safe distances essential.
The loss of four lives, including three members of one family, highlights the devastating consequences of road accidents. Police have seized the truck, while the circumstances surrounding the crash remain a matter of concern.
