Four Ports Under Weather Alert

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 for all four major seaports of the country amid a spell of active monsoon conditions. The ports under alert are Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra.

According to the department, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions today, Tuesday. The capital city, Dhaka, has remained under persistent cloud cover since the morning, with intermittent rainfall already recorded. Weather officials have indicated that further spells of rain may continue throughout the day, although conditions could gradually improve later as cloud cover shifts.

Rainfall activity began across various parts of the country on Sunday and has since continued intermittently. The capital experienced rainfall alongside several other regions, accompanied by dense cloud formations over much of the sky. On Sunday, a total of 41 millimetres of rainfall was recorded, contributing to a noticeable reduction in the prevailing heat conditions.

Prior to the onset of rainfall, Bangladesh had experienced a prolonged heatwave lasting approximately one week, affecting Dhaka and most parts of the country. The extreme temperatures, combined with intermittent power outages in several areas, had created difficult living conditions. However, the recent rainfall has provided partial relief, with a gradual decline in heat intensity observed since Sunday.

Meteorological terminology classifies rainfall between 44 and 88 millimetres as “heavy rainfall,” while precipitation exceeding 88 millimetres is defined as “very heavy rainfall.”

As of late morning, rainfall continued in Dhaka, with precipitation recorded at different intervals. The Meteorological Department reported that the capital received 8 millimetres of rainfall during the night, followed by a further 1 millimetre between 6:00 am and 9:00 am on Tuesday.

Meteorologist Kazi Zebunnesa stated that deep convective cloud formations have developed over the region. This atmospheric condition, driven by variations in air pressure, has prompted the issuance of the cautionary signal for the seaports.

Another meteorologist, Mohammad Shahinul Islam, confirmed the rainfall measurements for Dhaka, noting the recent overnight and early morning precipitation.
