Frog Found in Food Packet Sparks Action

A food safety incident in Kurigram’s Roumari Upazila has triggered widespread concern among local residents after an entire frog was allegedly discovered inside a packet of Morog Polao purchased from a local food outlet. Following an investigation by the upazila administration, the allegation was found to be genuine, leading to financial penalties against the establishment responsible for preparing and selling the food.

The incident came to light on 1 June when two local residents, Atiar Rahman and Ashikur Rahman, purchased five packets of Morog Polao from Nanna Biryani House, a food business operating in the area. According to local sources, the men took the meals home for family consumption. While serving the food, family members reportedly noticed a whole frog inside one of the packets.

The discovery caused immediate alarm and dissatisfaction among those present, raising questions about hygiene standards, food preparation procedures, and quality control practices. The consumers subsequently reported the matter to the local administration, prompting an official inquiry.

Acting on the complaint, officials from the Roumari Upazila Administration conducted an investigation into the incident. After examining the allegation, authorities concluded that the complaint was valid. As a result, a mobile court operated by the administration imposed a fine of Tk 20,000 on the food establishment on Monday afternoon.

Roumari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Alauddin confirmed that the investigation had verified the presence of the frog in the food packet. He stated that the penalty was imposed in consideration of public health concerns and consumer rights. The business was also instructed to exercise maximum caution in food preparation, handling and serving practices in the future.

The UNO further warned that food-related businesses must comply with established hygiene and safety regulations at all times. He added that stricter administrative and legal measures could be taken if similar incidents occur again.

The case quickly gained attention on social media, where many residents expressed concerns regarding cleanliness, workplace conditions and quality assurance in local food establishments. Several commentators called for more frequent inspections and stronger enforcement measures to ensure that consumers receive safe and hygienic food products.

Food safety specialists often emphasise that contamination can occur at multiple stages of food production, including ingredient storage, preparation, cooking and packaging. Maintaining clean kitchen environments, properly storing raw materials, conducting routine inspections and ensuring staff adherence to hygiene protocols are considered essential measures for preventing such incidents.
