Ganguly Takes Charge of Delhi Capitals Ahead of 2027

Sourav Ganguly is set to take on a new challenge in the Indian Premier League after being appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2027 season. The former India captain has been a familiar presence around the franchise for several years, but his latest appointment gives him a more direct role in shaping the team and guiding its campaign from the dugout.

Known as ‘Maharaj’ among cricket followers, Ganguly has maintained a long association with Delhi Capitals. He joined the franchise as an adviser in 2019 and later served as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s Capitals teams after completing his tenure as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

His appointment also comes after a recent spell in franchise coaching outside the IPL. Ganguly served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 competition, adding hands-on experience in managing a T20 franchise to his background as an international player, captain and cricket administrator.

Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who had been in charge of Delhi Capitals for the previous two seasons. The coaching change comes as the franchise prepares for another attempt to build a side capable of competing for the IPL title.

Speaking after taking up the position, Ganguly said he was eager to begin his new role as an IPL head coach. He described Delhi Capitals as a franchise particularly close to his heart, reflecting the relationship he has developed with the organisation over several years.

Ganguly is already familiar with the people and structure around the team. During his previous roles, he worked closely with the ownership group, management, support staff and players. That familiarity should give him a strong understanding of the environment in which he will now operate as head coach.

The former India opener also believes the squad has considerable potential. He pointed to the presence of a number of talented cricketers and the encouraging cricket produced by the team in recent times. His stated objective is to develop a strong and fearless side before the new season begins.

For Delhi Capitals, the appointment comes with considerable expectations. Despite being one of the established franchises in IPL history, the team has never won the competition. Punjab Kings are the only other franchise from the league’s early years that are still waiting for their maiden IPL title.

Delhi came closest to ending that wait in 2020. The franchise reached its first IPL final that year, but the campaign ended without the trophy. It remains the team’s best finish in the competition.

The Capitals were also strong during the 2021 league stage, finishing at the top of the points table. However, they could not progress to the final. Since that campaign, the franchise has been unable to qualify for the play-offs.

Their most recent season ended with Delhi sixth in the points table. Axar Patel led the side, while Badani was in charge of the coaching set-up. The result once again highlighted the gap between the team’s potential and its ability to maintain a sustained challenge deep into the tournament.

Ganguly therefore arrives with a demanding task. He will need to help the Capitals turn their individual talent into a more consistent team performance, while also dealing with the pressure created by years without an IPL title.

His background gives him experience across several areas of the game. As a former India captain, he understands leadership at the highest level; as a BCCI president, he gained extensive administrative experience; and through his work with Delhi Capitals and Pretoria Capitals, he has become familiar with the demands of franchise cricket.

The 2027 campaign will now provide Ganguly with an opportunity to bring those experiences together. Delhi Capitals have already shown that they can reach the latter stages of the IPL, but converting potential into a championship remains the central challenge.

For Ganguly, the objective is clear: build a confident and competitive Delhi side and finally help the franchise move beyond its long wait for an IPL trophy.
