Former India captain and cricket legend Sourav Ganguly has turned 54, with tributes pouring in from across the cricketing world to celebrate one of the game’s most influential leaders. While his achievements on the field remain central to the celebrations, his birthday has also renewed interest in another enduring symbol of his legacy—his sprawling ancestral residence in Behala, Kolkata.
Affectionately known as “Dada”, Ganguly is widely regarded as one of the architects of modern Indian cricket. Renowned for his elegant left-handed batting, fearless captaincy and aggressive approach to leadership, he helped transform India’s fortunes during the early 2000s. Despite enjoying international fame and holding some of the most prominent positions in Indian cricket after his playing career, Ganguly has remained closely connected to his roots.
Unlike many sporting icons who relocate after achieving success, Ganguly continues to live in his family’s ancestral home on Biren Roy Road in Behala. He resides there with his wife, renowned Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly, their daughter Sana, and other members of the extended family. The residence has become as closely associated with the former captain as his celebrated cricketing career.
For more than six decades, the property has served as the Ganguly family’s home and remains one of Kolkata’s best-known private residences. According to information published by real estate platform NoBroker, the property’s estimated value is around ₹400 million (40 crore rupees). With 48 rooms spread across the estate, it is considered one of the city’s largest privately owned homes.
The residence combines traditional Bengali architectural character with modern comforts. Its distinctive red-and-white exterior reflects the classic style seen in many historic Kolkata homes, while the interiors feature a calm palette of white, beige and brown, creating a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. The house regularly hosts family celebrations, festive gatherings and private functions attended by relatives and close friends.
One of the home’s most admired features is its dedicated “Wall of Fame”, where trophies, medals, awards and memorabilia from Ganguly’s distinguished cricket career are carefully displayed. Comfortable brown leather sofas allow visitors to sit and appreciate the collection, which chronicles decades of success at both domestic and international level.
The property also includes multiple drawing rooms, spacious family living areas and an elegant dining hall furnished with traditional-style chairs and a large dining table. The layout reflects the importance of family life and hospitality, values that have long been associated with the Ganguly household.
Outside, a large landscaped garden filled with mature trees provides a peaceful setting away from the bustle of the city. A red-and-white tiled jogging path winds through the greenery, offering a pleasant space for walking and exercise.
Perhaps the most fitting feature of the residence is the private cricket pitch within the grounds. Even after retiring from international cricket, Ganguly is known to spend time there whenever his schedule allows, maintaining the lifelong connection with the sport that defined his career.
As Sourav Ganguly celebrates another birthday, his ancestral home continues to attract attention not merely because of its impressive size or estimated value, but because it reflects his enduring attachment to family, heritage and the city that shaped his remarkable journey. For many admirers, the Behala residence stands as a reminder that despite global recognition, the former India captain has never lost touch with the place he has always called home.
