A tragic domestic dispute in Gazipur city culminated in the violent death of a young garment worker, whose body was discovered inside a rented residential apartment under suspicious circumstances. Law enforcement authorities have launched an intensive manhunt for the victim’s husband, who remains at large following the grim incident.
The grim discovery was made in the early hours of Monday morning within a rented home owned by Hafizur Rahman in the Parijat area of Konabari, located inside the Gazipur metropolitan region. The deceased has been identified as twenty-four-year-old Rokeya, a native of Horiaguni village under Trishal Upazila in Mymensingh district. Living away from her ancestral home, she resided in Konabari alongside her twenty-seven-year-old husband, Arif, while earning her livelihood as an operative at a local garment manufacturing unit.
According to preliminary accounts gathered by local police and neighbourhood residents, the couple’s domestic life had been plagued by persistent marital discord and frequent quarrels over the past several years. Family backgrounds revealed that the pair had entered into a romantic relationship and married approximately seven years ago; however, harmony within the household deteriorated steadily in the years that followed. Tensions reportedly boiled over on Sunday morning when a heated argument erupted between the couple.
Investigators and local sources deduce that the fatal assault likely occurred between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Sunday. During this window, the husband allegedly strangled his wife before locking the living quarters from the outside and fleeing the neighbourhood. Suspicion arose among neighbouring tenants late into the night when the victim failed to emerge from her room or show any signs of activity by 10:00 PM. Disturbed by the prolonged silence, fellow residents alerted local law enforcement.
Upon arriving at the scene, police gained entry to find the lifeless body of the young woman. An initial inquest report was compiled at the scene, following which the remains were dispatched to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for a comprehensive post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Iftekhar Hossain confirmed the primary assessment, stating that visible ligature marks discovered around the victim’s neck strongly point towards a homicide by asphyxiation. He noted that because the prime suspect fled immediately following the crime, officers have been deployed across various locations to apprehend him. Authorities have confirmed that formal murder charges are currently being prepared by the victim’s grieving family, and legal proceedings will proceed swiftly once the police report is finalised.
