A 23-year-old man has been arrested along with an illegal firearm after allegedly shooting his 70-year-old grandfather during a dispute that erupted at a village arbitration meeting in Lakshmipur’s Chandraganj area. The incident, which stemmed from a long-running family conflict, has drawn attention to the escalating consequences of unresolved domestic disputes.
According to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the suspect, Md Ashik, was arrested on Monday night from the Jatrabari area of Dhaka in connection with the shooting. Following his arrest, RAB members conducted a separate operation on Tuesday afternoon in Rashidpur village under Bashikpur Union of Chandraganj Upazila, where they recovered a firearm allegedly linked to the incident.
The information was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon by Mithun Kumar Kundu, Company Commander of RAB-11’s Noakhali Camp. He said the suspect has since been handed over to Chandraganj Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Investigators said the shooting was the culmination of a family dispute involving Ashik’s parents, Faruk and Ayesha Begum. Local residents and the case statement indicate that tensions between the couple had persisted for some time, prompting community leaders to arrange a village arbitration meeting on 3 July in an attempt to settle the matter. Among those present at the meeting were Faruk’s uncle, Nazrul Islam, and other relatives.
During the mediation, an argument reportedly broke out involving Ayesha Begum, leaving her visibly angered. After the meeting, she allegedly contacted her son Ashik, who was staying in Dhaka, and informed him about the confrontation. Police said Ashik travelled to his home village later that night after learning of the incident.
The following afternoon, on 4 July, another confrontation took place over the same dispute. During the altercation, Ashik allegedly opened fire on his grandfather, Nazrul Islam. The 70-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound above his left wrist and was injured in the attack. Authorities have not disclosed further details about his current medical condition.
After the shooting, the suspect went into hiding. On 6 July, Nazrul Islam filed a case against his grandson at Chandraganj Police Station, accusing him of carrying out the attack. Since then, law enforcement agencies had been searching for the accused.
RAB officials said intelligence-based efforts eventually led to Ashik’s arrest in Dhaka. During subsequent questioning, officers recovered the firearm from a residence in Rashidpur village. Investigators are examining whether the recovered weapon was the same one used in the shooting and are continuing the inquiry into the incident.
Company Commander Mithun Kumar Kundu said the accused had been absconding since the attack and that both the arrest and the recovery of the firearm marked significant progress in the investigation. He added that the suspect has been transferred to Chandraganj Police Station, where the case will proceed in accordance with the law.
The incident has underscored how long-standing family disagreements can spiral into serious violence, prompting renewed calls for disputes to be resolved through lawful and peaceful means rather than confrontation.
