A deeply disturbing incident in a rural area of the Lalmai Upazila has triggered widespread concern after the remains of a teenage boy were discovered with the head separated from the body, nearly five months after burial.
The incident took place in Naora village under Bagmara North Union. According to local accounts, the discovery was made on Sunday afternoon when a group of young men were collecting palm fruit from a nearby tree. While working close to the village graveyard, they noticed an unusual and alarming sight beside one of the graves.
Upon closer inspection, they found a decomposed body lying outside the burial site, without a burial shroud, with the head separated from the torso. The discovery immediately spread through the village, causing panic and distress among residents.
Subsequently, villagers identified the remains as belonging to Maruf, a 13-year-old boy who had been buried approximately five months earlier in the same graveyard. Family members arrived at the scene and confirmed the identity of the body, breaking down in grief upon seeing the condition of the remains.
Following notification, officers from Lalmai Thana Police visited the site and initiated an initial inquiry. After completing the on-site examination, the authorities allowed the family to proceed with a reburial of the remains at the same graveyard.
Relatives stated that Maruf had died around five months ago after reportedly ingesting poison, which was initially considered a suicide. He was subsequently laid to rest in the family burial ground. The discovery of the disturbed grave and the missing head has since left the family in deep shock and distress.
While some local residents have speculated that the act may be linked to superstition or ritualistic practices, no confirmed evidence has been presented to support such claims. Police officials have emphasised that all possible angles are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation, including the circumstances surrounding the grave disturbance and the identity of those responsible.
Authorities have also stated that efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators and determine whether the grave was deliberately exhumed.
