In an extraordinary turn of events that will be written into football folklore, Norway have shattered Brazil’s aspirations of capturing a sixth world title. A late brace from Manchester City forward Erling Haaland guided the European nation to a monumental 2-1 victory, securing their passage to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.
For the opening 78 minutes of the match, Brazil appeared the more likely to break the deadlock. The South American heavyweights launched a succession of fluid attacking movements, with Bruno Guimarães and the teenage sensation Endrick spearheading the offensive. However, they repeatedly found themselves frustrated by the exceptional form of Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who delivered a defensive masterclass between the posts.
The complexion of the knockout tie changed entirely in the final ten minutes of regular time. Haaland, demonstrating the clinical efficiency that has made him a household name, breached the Brazilian defence twice in quick succession. Although Neymar Junior managed to convert a late penalty in stoppage time, it proved insufficient to spark a comeback, leaving Brazil’s “Hexa” ambitions in ruins at a stunned New Jersey stadium.
The fixture began at a frantic pace, with Norway nearly catching the five-time world champions cold within the opening minutes. In the fourth minute, Patrick Berg capitalised on a defensive defensive lapse to slot the ball past Alisson Becker. The Norwegian celebrations were cut short, however, as the referee disallowed the goal for an offside infringement, providing an early reprieve for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Brazil responded by asserting their dominance and were presented with a golden opportunity to take the lead in the tenth minute. Matheus Cunha was upended inside the penalty box, prompting a formal Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. The referee subsequently awarded a penalty, but Bruno Guimarães saw his low, powerful effort spectacularly parried away by Nyland.
As the first half progressed, Brazil continued to probe the Norwegian lines. Long-range efforts from Gabriel Martinelli and Cunha tested the resilience of the European side’s defence, but Norway held firm to ensure both teams went into the half-time interval on level terms.
In an attempt to seize control of the midfield, Norway introduced Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup ahead of the second half. Ancelotti countered in the 58th minute, withdrawing Cunha in favour of Endrick. The young Real Madrid forward almost made an immediate impact; a delightful cross from Vinícius Júnior found Endrick inside the area, but his hurried effort drifted just wide of the target.
Nyland remained central to Norway’s defiance, producing a superb save in the 62nd minute to deny a ferocious strike from Rayan. Sensing the need for veteran experience, Ancelotti introduced Brazil’s all-time top scorer Neymar Junior, alongside defender Danilo, in the 67th minute.
Despite the introduction of Brazil’s star forward, it was Haaland who stole the headlines. In the 79th minute, the towering striker connected with a perfectly weighted cross to head past Alisson, sending the Norwegian dugout into raptures.
Ten minutes later, Haaland doubled his tally, unleashing a bullet-like shot from outside the penalty area that left Alisson with no chance. Neymar’s successful penalty deep into injury time altered the scoreline but could not prevent Norway from claiming a historic place in the final eight.
