Hornet Attack Disrupts Police Drug Raid in Bhola, 25 Injured

A routine anti-narcotics operation in southern Bangladesh took an unexpected and painful turn when a massive swarm of hornets descended upon law enforcement officers and local residents, leaving at least 25 people injured.

The chaotic incident unfolded in the Janata Bazaar area of Badarpur Union, located within the Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola district. Responding to specific information provided by community members regarding illicit drug activity, a team from the Lalmohan Police Station arrived at the scene to apprehend a suspected local vendor. Outraged residents had already surrounded the female suspect, prompting officers to intervene promptly and secure the area.

As police officers and bystanders gathered near the location, a nearby nest was inadvertently disturbed, triggering an aggressive onslaught by the insects. Panic quickly ensued as the swarm attacked the crowd, stinging both the responding officers and the assembled locals who scrambled to find shelter. Amongst those stung were Sub-Inspector Asad and Assistant Sub-Inspector Al-Amin, alongside several other police personnel.

Eyewitness Alauddin Howlader, a local schoolteacher, explained that the situation escalated within seconds as the insects descended upon the area. Civilians, including local residents Bashar Howlader, Rubel, and Mamun, sustained multiple stings while attempting to flee the violent outburst.

Despite the painful disruption and temporary chaos, officers managed to maintain control of the operation. They successfully detained the suspect, identified as Sharmin, and confiscated a quantity of Yaba pills—a synthetic drug containing methamphetamine and caffeine—from her possession.

Confirming the event, Nazarul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Lalmohan Police Station, stated that the injured police personnel received immediate first aid treatment. He reaffirmed that the raid was mounted directly on community reporting and confirmed that legal proceedings against the detained woman are under way. The bizarre turn of events has generated widespread chatter across the locality, though authorities have assured the public that anti-narcotics drives will continue unabated.
