A man in Rajnagar Upazila of Moulvibazar has been arrested after allegedly murdering his wife, burying her body in the courtyard of their home, and later attempting to mislead police by reporting her as missing.
The accused, identified as 38-year-old Almgir Hossain, was taken into custody after police became suspicious of his statements while he was filing a General Diary (GD) at Rajnagar Police Station. Acting on information obtained during questioning, officers recovered the partially decomposed body of his 27-year-old wife, Jaheda Begum, from the family’s property on Monday, around 20 days after the alleged killing.
According to police and local sources, the incident dates back to the night of 20 June, when a domestic dispute reportedly escalated into violence. Investigators allege that Almgir strangled his wife during the altercation, causing her death. In an apparent attempt to conceal the crime, he dug a pit in the courtyard of his home and buried her body before carrying on as though she had disappeared.
Police said the suspect later visited Rajnagar Police Station to lodge a missing person report, claiming that his wife had secretly travelled abroad without informing anyone. However, officers on duty noticed inconsistencies in his account and found his behaviour unusually nervous and contradictory. Those observations prompted further questioning.
During sustained interrogation, investigators said Almgir eventually confessed to killing his wife and disclosed where the body had been buried. Acting on his statement, police searched the courtyard of his residence and recovered Jaheda Begum’s partially decomposed remains.
The body has since been sent to the morgue of Moulvibazar 250-bed District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The forensic examination is expected to help determine the precise cause of death and provide additional evidence for the investigation.
Officer-in-Charge Md Farid Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan of Rajnagar Police Station confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and that preparations are underway to register a murder case. He added that investigators are also examining whether any other individual may have been involved in the incident or in the subsequent attempt to conceal the crime.
The case has drawn considerable attention in the local community because of the alleged efforts to disguise the killing by filing a false missing report. Police have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem examination and other evidence collected during the inquiry.
