Mohammad Idris Mia, convenor of the Chattogram South District unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been appointed chairman of the Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) board for a three-year term.
The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives issued a notification confirming the appointment on Thursday, 17 September. The order was signed by Aktarun Nessa, senior assistant secretary of the Water Supply-3 branch of the Local Government Division.
According to the notification, Idris Mia’s appointment was made under Section 7(1) of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2026. The legislation, enacted in April this year, amended the existing legal framework governing water supply and sewerage authorities.
The appointment places Idris Mia at the head of the board of an organisation responsible for key water and sewerage services in Chattogram. The chairman of the board and the managing director have separate responsibilities, with the managing director serving in the full-time executive role, according to comments attributed to Idris Mia following his appointment.
Idris Mia has been serving as convenor of the 54-member Chattogram South District BNP committee since February 2025. He has also previously served as chairman of the Patiya District Council, according to reports published following Thursday’s appointment.
Speaking after receiving the appointment, Idris Mia expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and said he would make his best efforts to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to him. In separate comments, he said the WASA board chairmanship was not a full-time post and that his party activities would not be affected by the new responsibility.
The appointment comes as Chattogram continues to face the practical demands associated with managing water supply and sewerage services for a large and rapidly developing urban area. The authority’s board provides oversight, while executive management handles the organisation’s day-to-day operations.
The new chairman will therefore take up a role involving board-level oversight of an essential public utility. The three-year tenure, as specified in the government notification, is effective under the amended legal framework governing water supply and sewerage authorities.
