In Remembrance of Revolutionary Tripura Sengupta

Tripura Sengupta was among the young revolutionaries involved in the anti-British independence movement in the Indian subcontinent during the colonial period. His political involvement was closely associated with the revolutionary activities centred in Chittagong during the late 1920s and early 1930s.

He was born on 12 May 1913 in Comilla. His father was Nibaran Chandra Sengupta. From an early age, he was exposed to ideas of nationalism and revolutionary politics, which shaped his engagement with anti-colonial activities.

In May 1929, at the Chittagong District Congress conference, presided over by Subhas Chandra Bose, discussions took place between several young revolutionaries, including Surya Sen, Ananta Singh, Ganesh Ghosh, and Tripura Sengupta. During this meeting, they conveyed their preparedness for armed resistance against British colonial rule. According to historical accounts referenced in revolutionary records, Bose provided moral support to the idea expressed by the group, although the Congress organisation at the time officially adhered to non-violent methods.

Tripura Sengupta later became an active member of the revolutionary group led by Surya Sen. On 18 April 1930, he participated in the Chittagong armoury raid, an organised attempt to seize weapons and disrupt colonial administration in Chittagong. Prior to the operation, he was assigned the responsibility of gathering intelligence from telegraph and telephone offices, a task he reportedly completed as part of the operational preparation.

Four days after the armoury raid, on 22 April 1930, the confrontation at Jalalabad Hill took place between British forces and the revolutionary group. During this engagement, Tripura Sengupta participated in a command role within the revolutionary forces. He was killed in action at the age of 17 during the armed encounter.
