India Suffer Fresh All-Rounder Blow Before Overseas Tour

India’s preparations for their upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England have suffered another significant setback, with promising all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy set to miss both assignments because of an unresolved left-leg injury. The development comes after star all-rounder Hardik Pandya had already been ruled out through injury, leaving the team management facing an increasingly difficult task in balancing the squad ahead of a demanding international schedule.

Reddy had emerged as one of the leading candidates to fill the void left by Pandya, thanks to his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. His absence now forces India’s selectors and coaching staff to reconsider their options in the pace-bowling all-rounder department, an area that has become increasingly important in the shortest formats of the game.

Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India has yet to issue an official statement confirming his withdrawal, reports indicate that Reddy has not fully recovered from the injury and is highly unlikely to feature in either the Ireland series or the subsequent tour of England.

The injury first surfaced during the opening One-Day International against Afghanistan in Dharamshala, where Reddy experienced discomfort while bowling. As a precaution, he was rested for the second ODI in Lucknow in the hope that additional recovery time would prevent the problem from worsening.

The young all-rounder returned for the third and final ODI in Chennai, delivering six overs and conceding 42 runs. However, after the match he again reported pain and discomfort in his left leg. Medical assessments subsequently confirmed that the injury had not healed sufficiently, prompting the decision to remove him from competitive action rather than risk aggravating the problem.

Reddy is now expected to undergo at least a month of rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. During this period, he will work under the supervision of specialist doctors, physiotherapists and strength and conditioning experts as he gradually rebuilds his fitness. Only after successfully completing every stage of the rehabilitation programme and passing the required fitness assessments will he be cleared to return to competitive cricket.

His absence is particularly untimely given India’s packed international calendar. The team is scheduled to play two Twenty20 Internationals against Ireland on 26 and 28 June before travelling to England, where a five-match T20I series begins on 1 July. That will be followed by a three-match One-Day International series starting on 14 July.

Without both Pandya and Reddy, India lose two players capable of providing balance by contributing in multiple disciplines. A genuine pace-bowling all-rounder offers flexibility in team selection, allowing captains to strengthen both the batting and bowling departments without sacrificing depth in either. Replacing such players is rarely straightforward, particularly ahead of back-to-back international series.

Looking further ahead, India’s next major assignment is a Test tour of Sri Lanka in August, where they are due to play two matches. Returning to full fitness before that series has now become Reddy’s primary objective. If his rehabilitation progresses as planned and he successfully clears the necessary medical and fitness evaluations, he is expected to resume his push for a regular place in the national side.

For India, the latest injury represents another unwelcome disruption to preparations for an important stretch of international cricket. With key personnel unavailable, the selectors and team management will once again need to reassess their squad composition to ensure the side remains competitive throughout the forthcoming tours.
