India’s much-anticipated white-ball tour of Bangladesh in September has once again been thrown into uncertainty, with recent political developments adding fresh pressure to bilateral cricketing ties.
Under the current schedule, India are expected to travel to Bangladesh in September for a white-ball series. However, questions are now being raised over whether the tour will go ahead as planned. People familiar with the situation within Bangladesh cricket are reportedly concerned that the changing political climate could make it difficult to secure the necessary arrangements within the available timeframe.
Relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have been strained since the change of government in Bangladesh on 5 August 2024. The political tension has also affected sporting exchanges between the two neighbours. India have not toured Bangladesh since 2022, while concerns over security and the wider political environment have previously contributed to uncertainty surrounding scheduled cricketing engagements.
The latest concerns intensified following a virtual press conference involving former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India, and several senior figures from her political party. The event, held on 5 August, became another source of tension in relations between the two countries. There is now concern within cricketing circles that the political developments could have repercussions for the proposed India tour.
A senior Bangladesh Cricket Board official, speaking anonymously to a sports news outlet, reportedly acknowledged that uncertainty had emerged over the September series. According to the official, the prospect of receiving a positive response from the Indian side currently appears less certain than before.
The official also indicated that preparations were expected to be in place by 28 August, leaving little time for the two cricket boards and the relevant security and administrative authorities to coordinate the tour. A bilateral international series involves extensive logistical planning, including venue preparations, security arrangements, travel, accommodation, broadcasting and coordination between the respective cricket authorities.
The situation therefore extends beyond the control of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. While the board has continued to make preparations from its side, the prevailing circumstances mean that the final outcome will also depend on developments at political and diplomatic levels.
Despite the uncertainty, the BCB has not treated the series as cancelled. No formal announcement has been made by either cricket board, leaving open the possibility that circumstances could change before the scheduled tour. A rapid improvement in the broader environment could still allow preparations to continue and the series to take place.
The latest uncertainty follows a period in which Bangladesh-India cricketing relations had shown signs of improvement. During the tenure of the interim administration led by Dr Muhammad Yunus, strained political relations between Dhaka and New Delhi also affected communication between the two cricket boards. The possibility of an Indian tour consequently became less certain.
After a new government took office in February, however, there were indications that bilateral relations could gradually improve. Against that backdrop, cricketing communication became more active, raising hopes that India would travel to Bangladesh in September. The BCB subsequently maintained a positive stance towards hosting the series.
Those expectations have now been unsettled by the latest political developments. The coming weeks are therefore likely to be crucial, with the fate of the tour depending on the political and diplomatic climate as well as decisions by the two cricket boards.
For Bangladesh’s cricket supporters, the proposed series represents more than another bilateral engagement. An India tour carries considerable interest among fans and has wider implications for broadcasters, venues, sponsors and businesses associated with international cricket. India and Bangladesh have also developed a strong cricketing rivalry over the years, making matches between the two sides commercially and competitively significant.
Until the relevant authorities issue a formal decision, three possibilities remain open: the series could proceed as scheduled, be postponed, or ultimately be called off. For now, Bangladesh cricket is waiting for greater clarity from both the political arena and the cricketing authorities.
