In a statement issued on Saturday, 10 October 2026, the party’s central executive committee said Inu was suffering from serious health complications and was not receiving the medical care it considered necessary. The statement was sent by Sajjad Hossain, the party’s office secretary.
Inu has been in custody since 26 August 2024. According to the JSD, his age, prolonged detention and history of serious heart disease have contributed to concerns about his current condition. The party also alleged that repeated journeys between Kashimpur prison in Gazipur and courts in Dhaka, in connection with more than 100 cases against him, had placed additional strain on his health.
The statement traced Inu’s heart condition to 1988, when he reportedly suffered a serious cardiac episode while addressing a political rally in Sylhet. He received treatment in Bangladesh and abroad and subsequently continued his political activities while remaining under the supervision of heart specialists, according to the party.
In 2017, specialists in Singapore implanted an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in his body to help manage the risk associated with his heart condition. The device is designed to monitor heart rhythms and deliver treatment when certain dangerous abnormalities occur. The JSD said the system was connected to a server in Singapore, allowing his doctors to monitor his cardiac activity remotely and provide medical advice.
The party alleged that, following Inu’s arrest on 26 August 2024, prison authorities removed a portable monitor associated with the implanted device. It claimed that the monitor had not been reconnected, disrupting an important part of the remote monitoring arrangement and preventing his doctors from assessing his heart function as they had previously done.
The statement did not include a response from the prison authorities to this allegation.
The JSD also raised concerns about an episode of illness on 7 October 2026. According to the party, Inu was taken from Kashimpur prison to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka to attend proceedings in a case. He reportedly became seriously ill after returning to prison and was admitted to the prison hospital.
The party alleged that his blood pressure was abnormal and unstable and that he was experiencing chest pain. Despite these symptoms, it claimed, he was neither kept in the prison hospital for the necessary treatment nor transferred to an outside hospital equipped to provide specialist care.
Inu’s wife had visited him in prison on 24 September, the statement said. During that meeting, he reportedly told her about his deteriorating health, and she also saw that he was unwell. The party called on the authorities to arrange treatment at an appropriate hospital without delay.
Alongside the medical concerns, the JSD objected to the cancellation of Inu’s first-class prison division. The statement said a court had ordered that he be granted first-class status after his arrest, and that the Dhaka district administration had implemented the order.
However, according to the party, the authorities at Kashimpur Central Jail cancelled his division on 6 October, acting on instructions from senior officials. The JSD said Inu was subsequently placed in a cell at Kashimpur Prison-2 with eight other inmates.
The party argued that his eligibility for first-class prison status had previously been assessed in light of his family and social circumstances, educational qualifications, contribution to sport, role in the independence struggle and Liberation War, and long involvement in national politics. It also cited his age, medical condition and status as a regular taxpayer.
The JSD urged the government to reconsider the decision in light of a fresh application submitted by Inu’s wife on 24 September. It called for his first-class division to be restored under Rules 617 and 910 of the prison regulations, as cited in the statement.
The demands concern two separate issues: access to appropriate medical treatment and the basis on which Inu is being classified and accommodated in prison. The party maintains that both require urgent attention given his age and cardiac history.
The allegations regarding the removal of the monitoring equipment, the handling of his reported illness and the cancellation of his prison division were set out in the JSD statement. No response from the prison authorities or the government was included in the information provided. Independent confirmation of the claims was not available in the statement.
The party called on the government to ensure that Inu receives specialist medical attention and to restore his previous prison classification in accordance with the applicable rules.
