K-Drama ‘As You Stood By’ Strikes a Chord with Audiences Worldwide

The Korean drama ‘As You Stood By’ has quickly become a global sensation following its release on Netflix. Within its first week, it climbed to the eighth position among the platform’s most-streamed foreign-language series and now ranks in the top 10 in 22 countries. This eight-episode series delves into the intertwined lives of two women seeking revenge, blending suspenseful storytelling with a commentary on empowerment and resilience.

The drama, directed by Lee Jeong-rim, features Yun-su (Jeon So-nee) and Hui-su (Lee Yu-mi) in leading roles. Hui-su, a victim of her husband No Jang-pyo’s (Jang Seung-jo) abuse, joins forces with her close friend Yun-su to plot his murder. The storyline intensifies around whether they can carry out their plan, while also exploring the profound emotional and ethical implications of their actions.

Lee Yu-mi described the experience as transformative, telling the South China Morning Post: “The series may be a thriller, but at its core it is about women reclaiming their power. That’s why I was drawn to the role. The response from viewers has been deeply moving.” She also explained the physical and psychological preparation involved: “I had to maintain composure on set while managing mental pressure. At times, I took breaks to recover. Physically, I reduced my weight to reflect the character’s distress authentically.”

Director Lee emphasised that she wanted to break away from traditional, one-dimensional female portrayals. “Most films and series present female characters as either clichéd or unrealistic,” she explained. With this series, she aimed to create characters that audiences could truly relate to. While no official announcement has been made, media reports in South Korea suggest that a second season is likely, keeping fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter.
