Kidnap Bid Ends in Deadly Highway Explosion

A dramatic and deadly incident unfolded on a busy highway in India’s Karnataka state after a suspected kidnapper allegedly detonated an explosive device inside a moving vehicle, moments after his former girlfriend escaped by jumping to safety.

The incident took place on Saturday, 27 June, along National Highway 48 near Jogihalli in Sira Taluk, Tumakuru district. According to police, the explosion engulfed the vehicle in flames within seconds, killing the accused man, identified as 30-year-old Nagendra, who became trapped inside the burning car. The woman he allegedly abducted, along with Uber cab driver Praveen, sustained injuries and were taken to Tumakuru District Hospital for treatment.

Investigators said Nagendra and the woman, who works as an operation theatre technician in Bengaluru, had previously been in a romantic relationship. The relationship had reportedly ended in recent months, leading to personal disputes between the pair. Police believe the woman had blocked Nagendra’s phone number following the breakdown of their relationship.

According to the investigation, Nagendra went to the woman’s rented accommodation in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar area on Saturday morning. An argument allegedly broke out before he forced her into a yellow-numbered Uber cab. After the woman went missing, her parents lodged a kidnapping complaint at Jayanagar Police Station.

Police further alleged that during the journey towards Ankola, Nagendra threatened to kill the woman before taking his own life. Investigators suspect he was carrying an explosive device and had shown it to her during the trip, heightening fears for her safety.

The situation escalated dramatically near Jogihalli. Authorities said Nagendra allegedly attacked the woman with a knife while the vehicle was still moving. Recognising the danger, the driver brought the car to an immediate halt. Seizing the opportunity, the woman managed to unlock the door and jump out of the vehicle, escaping moments before disaster struck.

Within seconds of her escape, a powerful explosion ripped through the car. The vehicle was quickly consumed by flames, leaving Nagendra trapped inside. He died at the scene before emergency assistance could reach him. The blast also caused significant disruption on the busy highway, resulting in a traffic tailback stretching for more than a kilometre.

Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok K.V. said preliminary findings indicate that Nagendra had been carrying an explosive device and may have deliberately triggered it. Investigators recovered bomb-like materials from the wreckage and have launched a detailed forensic examination to determine the exact nature of the explosive, how it was activated, and where it originated.

Police have continued their investigation and are examining all available evidence, including witness statements, forensic findings, and the accounts of the injured survivors, to establish the full sequence of events leading to the fatal explosion.
