Ukraine has launched a coordinated series of long-range drone strikes targeting two major Russian oil refineries, marking a significant escalation in Kyiv’s strategy to dismantle Moscow’s war economy at its source. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that overnight operations struck a crucial energy facility in the Yaroslavl region for the second consecutive night, damaging infrastructure located hundreds of kilometres behind the front lines.
Video footage published by local residents across social media platforms showed a massive fire engulfing the Slavneft-YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl, an industrial hub situated over 700 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Astra, an independent Russian news channel on Telegram, cross-referenced and geolocated the footage to verify the location of the blaze. During the same wave of attacks, Ukrainian uncrewed aerial vehicles flew as far as the Republic of Bashkortostan—nearly 1,300 kilometres from active combat zones—hitting a smaller fuel processing facility.
In an official statement posted to Facebook, President Zelensky described these deep strikes as a form of physical “sanctions” designed to choke off the revenues Russia extracts from petroleum exports. He emphasised that restricting these energy profits directly undermines Moscow’s capacity to finance its ongoing military campaign and sustain hardware losses on the battlefield.
Russian regional authorities reacted quickly as the aerial threat unfolded. Mikhail Yevrayev, the governor of the Yaroslavl region, acknowledged the drone incursions and confirmed that emergency services had placed temporary traffic restrictions on key motorways leading towards Moscow. These closures impacted strategic junctions connecting the south-western ring road and Moskovsky Prospekt, both situated near the burning refinery complex. Official Russian sources, however, offered no details regarding structural damage to the facility. Reports from local residents indicated that secondary fires had spread to nearby residential properties, though these civilian impacts remain unverified by independent news outlets.
The Slavneft-YANOS plant in Yaroslavl is a vital pillar of Russia’s domestic energy network. Operating as the largest refinery in central Russia and ranking among the country’s top five processing plants, it holds an annual crude capacity of roughly 15 million metric tonnes. The industrial complex manufactures essential petroleum outputs, including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, liquefied gas, and heavy fuel oil—resources that power both civilian transport and military logistics.
This recent barrage fits into a broader, aggressive campaign by Ukrainian forces. Having targeted the Yaroslavl plant four times in May 2026 alone, Kyiv continues to strike high-value assets repeatedly to prevent quick repairs. According to Ukrainian defence officials, these persistent long-range operations have forced several Russian refineries to reduce production or shut down operations entirely, placing unprecedented strain on Moscow’s internal fuel supply chains.
