The newly appointed Minister of Local Government, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has pledged to expedite arrangements for municipal, city corporation, and upazila elections across the country.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday morning, 18 February, shortly after assuming office at the Secretariat, the minister emphasised the urgency of revitalising local democratic processes. “I have taken on this role fully aware of the challenges of nation-building,” he stated. “Our cabinet is committed to addressing the problems faced by the people at every level.”
Minister Fakhrul highlighted the need to restore law and order, citing recent instances of mob violence and deterioration in public safety. “Strengthening law enforcement and ensuring public security are immediate priorities,” he said. “We will work closely with local administrations to prevent such incidents in the future.”
In addition, with the commencement of Ramadan, the minister noted that the government would review essential commodity prices to protect consumers. “Ensuring affordability and market stability will be discussed at cabinet level,” he added, stressing that coordinated monitoring mechanisms would be implemented to prevent price surges during the holy month.
