Lonely Farewell in Faridpur Flat

The life of 54-year-old Koel Chowdhury came to a poignant end after years of living alone in a spacious three-storey family residence in Faridpur. Although he was rescued while unconscious and rushed to hospital, doctors were unable to save him. His death has since drawn attention not only because of the circumstances surrounding it, but also because of the profound isolation that marked the final years of his life.

According to local residents, the incident unfolded on Sunday morning at Chowdhury Villa in the Purba Khabaspur area of Faridpur town. A tenant who regularly delivered meals to Koel Chowdhury arrived at his flat as usual but received no response despite repeated knocking. Concerned by the unusual silence, the tenant alerted neighbours, who quickly contacted Bangladesh’s national emergency service on 999.

Police officers arrived shortly afterwards, forced open the door and found Koel Chowdhury unconscious inside the flat. Several residents present at the scene later recalled noticing dried tear marks near the corners of his eyes when he was rescued. He was immediately taken to hospital, where attending physicians declared him dead despite efforts to provide treatment.

Neighbours said Koel Chowdhury’s parents, Hashmat Ali Chowdhury and Asiya Khanam, had both served as government employees. Around 2000, the family purchased the building in Purba Khabaspur and made it their permanent home. Following the deaths of their parents, the family gradually became fragmented. Their only sister later moved to Canada for higher education and settled there permanently, leaving the two brothers, Babu Chowdhury and Koel Chowdhury, to continue living in the family home.

Residents who had known the brothers for years described them as gentle, quiet and harmless individuals. According to neighbours, both had reportedly struggled with mental health challenges over a long period, although they were never known to behave aggressively or create disturbances. Instead, they became familiar figures in the neighbourhood, often seen walking together through the streets—sometimes side by side, sometimes holding each other’s hands. Their close bond and mutual dependence left a lasting impression on many local people.

That companionship came to an end roughly eighteen months ago when elder brother Babu Chowdhury died. His death left Koel entirely alone in the large family flat. Since then, neighbours said, his isolation deepened considerably. Although no close family members were regularly present to care for him, tenants living in the building ensured he received daily meals, while other local residents checked on him whenever possible and offered assistance when needed.

Neighbour Ashikur Rahman Khan said the seriousness of the situation became clear when repeated attempts to contact Koel failed on Sunday morning. Police rescued him while he was still believed to be alive, but doctors later confirmed his death after he was taken to hospital.

According to local residents, Koel Chowdhury’s sister in Canada was informed of his death. They alleged that she requested local residents to arrange the funeral on her behalf. Other relatives were also notified, but none arrived in time to attend the burial. Ultimately, residents of the neighbourhood organised the funeral themselves, laying him to rest beside the graves of his parents at Alipur Cemetery in Faridpur. A few distant relatives reportedly reached the cemetery later, but no immediate family members were present before the burial. Neighbours claimed a similar situation had arisen when his elder brother died about a year and a half earlier.

For many years, local people have also circulated an unverified belief that the two brothers were regularly given sleeping medication by their parents before they left for work during the brothers’ childhood. However, there is no official, medical or documentary evidence to support this claim, and it should not be regarded as established fact.

Officer-in-Charge Md Mahamudul Hasan of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station said police responded promptly after receiving the emergency call through the 999 service and rescued Koel Chowdhury while he was still alive. He added that local residents later transported him to hospital. The officer also stated that after Koel’s death, no one formally informed the police regarding the subsequent developments.

The circumstances surrounding Koel Chowdhury’s final days have prompted wider reflection on social isolation, mental health support and the weakening of family connections. While his final moments were marked by the absence of close relatives, local residents ensured that he did not face his last journey alone. Their efforts to provide daily care during his life and to arrange his burial after his death have been widely viewed as an example of compassion and community responsibility in the face of personal tragedy.
