Lutfa Taher: A Lifetime of Courage and Justice

Born on 31 July 1947 in Kishoreganj, Lutfa Taher has built a public life defined by resilience and public service. Beyond her role as the widow of a national hero, she has also been active in politics. In 2014, she was elected as a Member of Parliament from Reserved Women’s Seat-40 representing Kishoreganj under the nomination of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD). Throughout her political career, she has remained associated with issues of justice, democratic values and national history.

Her late husband, Colonel Abu Taher (Bir Uttam), occupies a significant place in Bangladesh’s Liberation War history. During the 1971 War of Independence, he served as the Sector Commander of Sector 11 and was recognised for his exceptional leadership and courage. In acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to the country’s independence, he was awarded the state honour of Bir Uttam, Bangladesh’s second-highest military gallantry award.

The couple’s family includes their three children—Jaya Taher, Abu Qaiser Jishu and Mishu—who grew up while witnessing their mother’s determined fight to restore their father’s reputation. Her perseverance through years of legal battles, public scrutiny and personal hardship has been widely regarded as an example of extraordinary courage.
