A 24-year-old man has been taken into police custody in the Chandpur Sadar Upazila under grave allegations of murdering his mother after she reportedly refused to provide him with money to purchase narcotics. The fatal domestic incident occurred during the late hours of Sunday, 17 May 2026, within the Balia Union locality. The matter came to public attention on Monday morning, leading to the immediate intervention of law enforcement officials and the apprehension of two individuals.
The deceased woman has been formally identified as 48-year-old Jannat Begum, a resident of Balia village. According to preliminary findings gathered by local authorities, the brutal assault took place inside the residence of one Sadek Khan, where the family resided. Following a swift operational response, officers attached to the Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station recovered the victim’s body from the scene and detained the principal suspect alongside his younger sibling.
Family Dynamics and Substance Abuse History
According to comprehensive statements provided by extended family members and immediate neighbours, the prime suspect, identified as Mohammad Rakib, had been struggling with severe narcotics addiction for an extended duration. Relatives asserted that Rakib routinely subjected his mother to systematic physical and verbal abuse in his persistent attempts to extort money to fund his substance dependence.
The underlying vulnerability of the household was further compounded by prolonged parental estrangement. Relatives of the deceased revealed that Jannat Begum’s husband, Abbas Khan, had entered into a second marriage and subsequently relocated permanently to the capital city of Dhaka.
