Police in Mohanganj, Netrokona, have arrested a 33-year-old man following allegations that he sexually assaulted his wife’s cousin after promising to marry her. The complainant is reportedly six months pregnant.
The accused, identified as Abu Hanif, is a father of two. He is the son of Abul Kashem of Bakhrapur village in Maghan Siyadhar Union, under Mohanganj police station.
According to the case statement, Hanif allegedly made romantic advances towards his wife’s cousin on several occasions. At one stage, he reportedly took the young woman to Sylhet after assuring her that he would marry her. The two stayed in a rented house there, where Hanif allegedly had a sexual relationship with her.
The woman later discovered that she was pregnant. After informing Hanif, she allegedly faced physical and psychological abuse. She also accused him of attempting several times to take her to hospital in an effort to terminate the pregnancy.
The dispute reportedly intensified when the woman sought to formalise the marriage. According to the complaint, she went to Hanif’s family home in Bakhrapur on the night of 13 September and pressed him to register their marriage. Hanif allegedly became angry and assaulted her during the confrontation.
The woman subsequently went to Mohanganj Police Station on Tuesday and lodged a complaint against Hanif, accusing him of sexual assault. Police arrested him on Wednesday night and produced him before a court on Thursday.
Mohanganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Hafizul Islam Harun confirmed the arrest and said the accused had been sent to court after police took prompt action following the complaint.
The allegations are now subject to police investigation and judicial proceedings. Details provided in the complaint will need to be assessed against available evidence before any final determination is made.
The case has also drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the alleged promise of marriage, the reported pregnancy and the subsequent dispute between the two parties. However, these allegations remain allegations at this stage.
