Bangladesh have been eliminated from the group stage of the AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers after suffering a 3-0 defeat against the Philippines. Despite creating promising opportunities and keeping their opponents at bay for much of the match, the Bangladesh side were unable to convert their chances before conceding three goals in the closing stages.
The victory secured the Philippines’ place at the 2027 AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup in China. With two wins and six points, they finished top of their group, while Bangladesh’s campaign came to an end.
Bangladesh goalkeeper Meghla Rani Roy played an important role in keeping the score level during the early stages. In the 23rd minute, she produced a save to deny a shot aimed towards the near post, preventing the Philippines from taking the lead.
Five minutes later, the Philippines threatened again when Arina Sofia sent an effort narrowly wide of the far post. The pressure continued, but Bangladesh managed to withstand the attacks and gradually looked more composed after the hydration break.
The break appeared to help Bangladesh regain some rhythm, with the team focusing more on retaining possession and building attacks. Their improved spell produced a notable opportunity in the 43rd minute, when Mousumi met a cross from a team-mate with a header. However, the effort drifted just wide of the post.
Bangladesh came even closer to scoring in first-half stoppage time. Alpi Akter struck a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area, only for the ball to rebound off the crossbar. It was a frustrating moment for the Bangladesh players, who had come close to taking the lead after weathering the Philippines’ earlier pressure.
The teams went into the break without a goal, leaving Bangladesh with reason to believe they could remain competitive in the contest. Their defensive resistance, however, was eventually broken in the 73rd minute.
The opening goal came after a cross from the left was not fully cleared by a Bangladesh defender. The loose ball fell to Maya Rose Buscaira, who took advantage of the opportunity to put the Philippines ahead. The goal shifted the balance of the match, forcing Bangladesh to pursue an equaliser while the Philippines sought to consolidate their advantage.
Bangladesh were unable to find a response, and Noelle Granger settled the contest with two late goals. In the 90th minute, she struck a diagonal shot from the right side of the penalty area to extend the Philippines’ lead. She then scored again in stoppage time, completing her brace and securing a 3-0 victory.
The final score reflected the Philippines’ ability to capitalise on their opportunities late in the match. Bangladesh, by contrast, were left to rue the chances that might have changed the outcome, particularly Mousumi’s header and Alpi Akter’s effort against the crossbar.
For Bangladesh, the defeat ends their hopes of progressing to the continental tournament at this age level. The performance nevertheless offered some encouraging moments, including Meghla Rani Roy’s early save and the team’s improved possession after the hydration break. Turning such passages of play into goals, while maintaining concentration in defence until the final whistle, will remain important challenges for the side.
The Philippines, meanwhile, can look ahead to the 2027 finals in China after finishing the group stage with six points from two victories. Their decisive finish against Bangladesh proved crucial in securing qualification and ending their opponents’ campaign.
