Mango Worker Found Hanging

Police in Chapainawabganj’s Nachole Upazila recovered the body of a mango orchard worker who was found hanging from a branch of a mango tree in an orchard at Guripukur village.

The deceased was identified as Atikul Islam, 19, son of the late Hazrat Ali of Saheb village under Choudala Union in Gomastapur Upazila.

According to local residents and police sources, Atikul had travelled to Nachole to work in mango packaging during the harvesting season. The work involves placing protective coverings on mangoes in orchards before harvesting. Seasonal workers from different parts of the district often travel to orchard areas during the mango season for such employment.

Police said that on Wednesday afternoon Atikul was working with other labourers in a mango orchard in Guripukur village. During the course of work, he reportedly went to a nearby orchard. Later in the afternoon, fellow workers found his body hanging from a mango tree branch and immediately informed the police.

Members of Nachole Police Station went to the scene and recovered the body in the evening. The body was later sent to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Officer-in-Charge Sukomal Chandra Debnath said that, prima facie, the incident appeared to be a case of suicide. He added that the exact cause of death would be determined after receiving the post-mortem report.

The officer further stated that police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and trying to determine the reason behind the incident. Police also said that Atikul had married around three to four months ago.

An unnatural death case has been filed with Nachole Police Station in connection with the incident.
