Madrasa Teacher Arrested Following Student Death and Abuse

The Rampura Police have apprehended a 19-year-old madrasa teacher, identified as Md. Shihab Hossain, in connection with the death of a student and allegations of serial sexual assault. The arrest was formally confirmed on Thursday by Harun or Rashid, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Motijheel Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Discovery of the Incident

On the evening of 19 May, police were alerted to the death of a 10-year-old student named Md. Abdullah at the Alokito Quran International Hifz Madrasa, located in Block-C of the Banasree residential area, Rampura. Upon arrival, officers discovered the child’s body suspended by a scarf (gamcha) tied around his neck.

The body was subsequently transported to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. During the preparation of the inquest report, investigating officers observed physical evidence indicating that the child had been subjected to unnatural sexual acts prior to his death.

Expanding Allegations and Investigation

Further inquiries conducted by the police revealed a pattern of predatory behaviour. Under interrogation, madrasa authorities disclosed that Md. Shihab Hossain had been accused of committing similar acts of sexual abuse against at least four other students at the institution.

Following these revelations, the victim’s mother, Mst. Tuku Ara Khatun, filed a formal complaint at the Rampura Police Station. The case names Shihab Hossain and several unidentified individuals as defendants. The primary charges brought against the accused include:

  • Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000 (Amended 2003).

  • Section 306 of the Penal Code (Abetment of suicide).

Apprehension of the Suspect

According to police sources, Shihab Hossain fled the madrasa and returned to his ancestral home shortly before Abdullah’s death was discovered. An operational team from the Rampura Police Station tracked the suspect to Khakchhara village, located within the Bera Police Station jurisdiction in the Pabna District, where he was taken into custody.
