Police in Ghior, Manikganj, have arrested a 24-year-old man after allegedly recovering 400 grams of cannabis from his possession during an operation in the upazila’s Pailla union.
The man, identified as Akhinur Islam, also known as Babu, was arrested at around 10.10am on Saturday, 3 October, in the Chhota Pailla area.
Police said a team from Ghior police station carried out the operation based on confidential information. The team was led by Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mizanur Rahman and went to the area in Chhota Pailla village, where they conducted an operation in front of Akhinur’s house.
According to police, Akhinur attempted to flee after noticing the presence of the officers. He was subsequently detained and searched.
During the search, officers allegedly found 400 grams of cannabis wrapped in a transparent blue polythene bag. Police estimated the market value of the seized cannabis at around Tk16,000.
Police said that during preliminary questioning, Akhinur admitted that he had kept the cannabis in his possession with the intention of selling it. The allegation, however, remains subject to the legal process and investigation.
Following the arrest, police seized the recovered substance and initiated legal proceedings against Akhinur. A case was filed at Ghior police station under Section 36(1), Schedule 19(a) of the Narcotics Control Act 2018.
The operation forms part of police action against the possession and alleged distribution of illegal drugs. In this case, investigators will be responsible for establishing the circumstances surrounding the recovery and determining whether anyone else was involved in obtaining or distributing the cannabis.
The case will now proceed under the relevant provisions of the law. Details regarding the source of the seized cannabis, whether it was intended for distribution in the local area and whether there are any other suspects connected to the case were not immediately available.
Police have not provided information about any previous criminal cases involving Akhinur. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and the case moves through the legal process.
