Three people were killed and two others seriously injured after two motorcycles collided head-on with a coconut-laden Nasimon in Morelganj, Bagerhat, on Saturday evening.
The accident occurred at around 6pm on 3 October on the Signboard–Sharankhola regional highway in Dona village, under Bolai Bunia union of Morelganj upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Rimon, 25, son of Babul Molla of Kalikabari village; Amin Hossain, 22, son of Nazrul Islam; and Muhib, 16, son of schoolteacher Mohammad Jamal.
According to local residents and police, two motorcycles were travelling along the road at high speed when they collided head-on with a Nasimon carrying coconuts. The impact left several people on the motorcycles seriously injured.
Rimon and Amin died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. Three other injured people were taken towards Morelganj Upazila Health Complex for treatment, but Muhib died on the way.
The two remaining injured people were taken to the health complex for medical attention. One of them was later referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital because of the severity of the injuries.
Mohammad Shahidullah, officer-in-charge of Morelganj police station, confirmed the incident. He said two people had died at the scene, while another died while the injured were being taken to the health complex.
The accident has caused grief among residents of the area, particularly as all three people who died were relatively young. Muhib was only 16, while Rimon and Amin were aged 25 and 22 respectively.
The collision also highlights the risks faced by road users on regional highways where motorcycles, Nasimons and other vehicles share the same carriageway. Nasimons are commonly used for transporting agricultural produce and other goods in rural areas, while motorcycles are widely used for local travel. A collision between such vehicles can result in severe injuries because of the difference in vehicle size and protection available to riders.
Local sources said the motorcycles were travelling at high speed before the crash. However, the precise circumstances surrounding the collision have not yet been established, and further details would depend on the authorities’ assessment of the incident.
Police have confirmed the deaths and the hospital referral but did not provide details of any legal action following the crash. The investigation is expected to establish how the collision occurred and the circumstances that led to the deaths and injuries.
