Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi have scored the same number of goals at the World Cup, with both players finding the net eight times. Yet, despite the identical goal tally, the French forward currently holds the advantage over the Argentina captain in the race for the prestigious Golden Boot award.
The reason lies in FIFA’s rules for deciding the tournament’s top scorer when two or more players finish with the same number of goals. The award is not determined solely by the number of goals scored. Instead, a set of tie-breaker criteria is applied to identify the winner.
The first factor considered is the number of assists recorded by each player. If the players remain level after that assessment, FIFA then looks at the total minutes played, with the player who has spent less time on the pitch gaining the advantage.
Under these rules, Mbappe is currently ahead of Messi. The French forward has scored eight goals and also provided three assists during the tournament. This means he has been directly involved in 11 goals for his team.
Messi, meanwhile, has also produced a remarkable scoring record, with eight goals of his own. However, the Argentina captain has registered two assists, giving him a direct contribution to 10 goals. That one-goal contribution difference places Mbappe above him in the current Golden Boot standings.
If the tournament were to end at this stage, Mbappe would be awarded the Golden Boot based on FIFA’s tie-breaking system. However, the race remains far from decided, as the remaining matches could dramatically change the standings. A single outstanding performance in the closing stages of the competition could alter the balance between the leading contenders.
The battle for the award is not limited to Messi and Mbappe. Several other high-profile forwards remain in contention, including England’s Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Norway’s Erling Haaland. Their performances in the final stages of the tournament could also influence the outcome of one of football’s most coveted individual honours.
For Messi, the Golden Boot would add another memorable achievement to an already historic World Cup campaign. For Mbappe, winning the award would further underline his status as one of the leading attacking players of his generation.
With the goal tally level and the margin between the contenders extremely narrow, the Golden Boot race has become one of the most closely watched battles of the tournament. The final outcome will depend not only on who scores more goals, but also on assists, playing time and the fine details of FIFA’s ranking criteria.
