Measles Death Toll Nears 800 Amid Persistent Outbreak

Bangladesh continues to face a worrying measles outbreak, with the disease and its associated symptoms claiming the lives of five more children over the past 24 hours. During the same period, another 1,069 children required hospital admission, highlighting the sustained pressure on the country’s healthcare system as authorities struggle to contain the spread of the highly contagious virus.

According to the latest situation report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday, the cumulative death toll linked to measles and measles-like symptoms has risen to 793 since 15 March, underscoring the severity of the outbreak.

The report shows that Sylhet Division recorded the highest number of fatalities during the latest reporting period, with three children dying after developing symptoms consistent with measles. Dhaka and Chattogram divisions each reported one additional child death, bringing the total number of fatalities over the past day to five.

Health authorities stated that, of the 793 deaths recorded between 15 March and 20 July, 698 occurred among children who exhibited measles-related symptoms, while laboratory testing later confirmed measles infection in 95 fatal cases. The figures suggest that many patients developed severe complications before laboratory confirmation could be completed, reflecting both the rapid progression of the disease in vulnerable children and the challenges of diagnosing every suspected case in time.

The outbreak also continues to generate a significant number of new infections. During the past 24 hours, laboratory tests confirmed measles in another 147 children, while an additional 922 children developed symptoms consistent with the disease. As a result, the nationwide total of laboratory-confirmed measles cases has reached 14,578 since mid-March. Over the same period, 118,570 people have been recorded as having measles-related symptoms, indicating widespread community transmission.

Hospital admissions remain high. A further 1,069 children were admitted to healthcare facilities during the latest reporting period. Since 15 March, a total of 101,026 patients have been hospitalised with confirmed measles or suspected measles symptoms. Of these, 97,532 have recovered following treatment and have been discharged. Although the recovery rate remains encouraging, thousands of patients continue to require medical care, placing continued demands on hospitals and frontline healthcare workers.

Public health specialists describe measles as one of the most infectious viral diseases, spreading easily through coughing and sneezing. Young children are particularly vulnerable, especially those who are malnourished, have weakened immune systems or have not received the recommended measles vaccinations. The illness can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, severe diarrhoea, ear infections and encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain that can result in permanent disability or death.

Medical experts continue to urge parents and guardians to ensure that children receive measles vaccinations according to the national immunisation schedule. They also advise families to seek immediate medical attention if a child develops a high fever, a widespread red rash, persistent cough, a runny nose or red, watery eyes, all of which are common early symptoms of the disease.

Health professionals believe that strengthening vaccination coverage, improving early detection and ensuring prompt treatment remain the most effective measures for reducing infections, preventing severe complications and lowering the death toll as Bangladesh continues its efforts to bring the outbreak under control.
