A 38-year-old woman sustained a gunshot injury inside her residence in the capital’s Darus Salam area on Saturday night after unidentified miscreants fired through an open window.
The victim, identified as Jasmeen Akhtar, was struck in her right arm whilst watching television at her home in the Matbbor Bari neighborhood. She is the wife of Abdul Mannan, originally hailing from Uttar Dalla village within the Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria. The family currently resides as tenants in a flat owned by one Aminul Doctor near Matbbor Bari.
According to her son, Yasin, who brought her to the medical facility, the family was caught completely off guard when the assailant opened fire from outside the building. The sudden sound of gunfire followed by Jasmeen’s cries caused immediate panic among the family members.
Relatives rushed her to a local clinic for immediate preliminary aid before transferring her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11:30 pm for further medical care.
Local authorities dispatched officers to the scene shortly after receiving news of the shooting. Police personnel collected initial information from the residence and subsequently sent a separate team to DMCH to observe the victim’s status and obtain her official testimony.
Dulal Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Darus Salam Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that a formal investigation is under way.
“We visited the location immediately upon receiving the information,” OC Hossain said. “The victim is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where a police team has been deployed to assist with the inquiry.”
Investigating officers noted that the motive behind the attack remains unknown. Police are examining whether the shooting was a targeted attempt on the victim or her family, the result of a personal dispute, or an unintended consequence of an external altercation outside the premises.
The incident has triggered widespread anxiety amongst residents in the residential enclave of Darus Salam. Investigators are scrutinising surrounding CCTV footage, looking into potential witness accounts of suspicious individuals or vehicles in the area, and attempting to trace the exact trajectory of the bullet to identify those involved. Police indicated that further details regarding the suspects and underlying motive will emerge as the inquiry progresses.
