Bangladesh continues to face a worrying rise in measles infections, with the outbreak showing little sign of slowing. In the latest 24-hour period, another child has died after developing symptoms associated with measles, while 992 more children have been affected by measles or measles-like symptoms.
According to the latest report released by the Directorate General of Health Services, the figures were recorded between 8am on Monday and 8am on Tuesday. Of the newly affected children, 173 were confirmed to have measles after medical testing, while 819 were reported to have symptoms resembling the disease.
The health authorities said the child who died from measles-related symptoms was from Dhaka. With this latest death, the total number of children who have died from measles and measles-like illnesses since 15 March has risen to 742. Among them, 649 deaths were linked to measles-like symptoms, while 93 children died after laboratory confirmation of measles infection.
The outbreak has expanded significantly over recent months, creating growing pressure on the country’s healthcare system. Health Directorate data shows that since 15 March, a total of 107,384 children have developed measles-related symptoms. During the same period, measles has been confirmed in 12,964 children. Combined, the number of children affected by measles and related symptoms has reached 120,348.
Hospitals across the country have increased monitoring and medical support for affected children. During the outbreak period, 90,522 children with measles-like symptoms have required hospital admission. Of those, 86,844 children have recovered and been discharged after receiving treatment.
Medical experts describe measles as a highly contagious viral disease that spreads mainly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Children remain particularly vulnerable because complications can become severe, especially among those with weakened immunity or inadequate nutrition.
Health specialists have stressed that timely vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent further transmission. They have also urged families to ensure that children receive all recommended vaccine doses and that those who have missed vaccinations are brought under immunisation coverage as quickly as possible.
Doctors have advised parents to seek medical attention immediately if children develop symptoms such as fever, a red rash, eye irritation, cough or a runny nose. Early diagnosis and proper care can reduce the risk of serious complications.
Public health officials believe that controlling the outbreak requires stronger surveillance, wider vaccination efforts and increased public awareness. With infections continuing to rise, authorities are focusing on improving disease monitoring and ensuring that affected children receive timely medical assistance.
The recent figures indicate that measles remains a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh. Strengthening preventive measures and maintaining close monitoring will be essential to contain the spread of the disease and protect children from further loss of life.
