Messi Brace Fires Inter Miami To Record-Breaking Win

Lionel Messi made an emphatic return to Inter Miami’s starting line-up after the World Cup, delivering a match-winning performance with two goals and an assist as the Major League Soccer side defeated Mexican club San Luis 4–2 in their opening Leagues Cup fixture.

The Argentine superstar had previously featured as a substitute in Inter Miami’s MLS match against Columbus last Sunday. Although that game ended in a 2–2 draw and Messi failed to find the net, he quickly returned to his best form in the Leagues Cup, reminding fans of his enduring influence on the pitch.

The victory also brought Messi a significant individual milestone. With his brace against San Luis, he became the highest-scoring player in Leagues Cup history. Since the competition adopted its new format in 2023, Messi has scored 14 goals, surpassing the previous record held by Los Angeles FC forward Denis Bouanga.

Messi’s record has come in remarkable fashion. He has scored two goals in a single Leagues Cup match on five occasions in just 12 appearances in the tournament, underlining his ability to deliver decisive performances even in knockout-style competitions.

The match at Miami began in disappointing fashion for the hosts. San Luis took the lead in the fourth minute when David Rodriguez found the back of the net, putting early pressure on Inter Miami.

However, the setback sparked an immediate response from Messi and his teammates. In the 11th minute, Messi produced a brilliant finish from Allen’s cross, striking a superb volley to level the score. The goal marked his first for Inter Miami since the 2026 World Cup and once again highlighted his exceptional technique and composure in front of goal.

Inter Miami then took control of the match. Telasco Segovia put the hosts ahead in the 26th minute, making it 2–1. Messi added another goal before half-time, collecting the ball inside the penalty area and finishing with his trademark precision to extend Miami’s lead.

The advantage became even more comfortable during first-half stoppage time. Messi’s corner kick created another opportunity, which was converted by Micael with a powerful header. Inter Miami went into the break with a commanding 4–1 lead.

San Luis attempted to fight back after the interval and reduced the deficit in the 51st minute through Rafael Llorente. Despite their efforts, the Mexican side could not find another breakthrough as Miami’s defence held firm.

The match was briefly interrupted in the second half due to heavy rainfall in Florida, causing a delay of more than 30 minutes. After play resumed, San Luis pushed forward in search of a comeback, but Inter Miami managed the game effectively and secured all three points.

The result provides Inter Miami with an encouraging start to their Leagues Cup campaign. Messi’s return to form, combined with the team’s attacking efficiency, has strengthened expectations around their chances in the tournament.

Inter Miami’s next Leagues Cup challenge will come on 9 August, when they face another Mexican side, Monterrey. With Messi once again leading from the front, supporters will be hoping for another memorable performance from the football icon.
