Midday Reversal Wipes Out Early Gains on Bangladesh Bourses

A dramatic midday turnaround on the premier bourses of Bangladesh erased early morning progress, forcing the major indices deep into the red on Sunday, 19 July. The week’s opening session saw widespread selling across both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), leaving declining stocks heavily outnumbering those that advanced. Accompanying the drop in value indices, overall market turnover contracted significantly as institutional and retail investors took a highly cautious stance.

The day had initially commenced with strong optimism at the Dhaka bourse, with buyers dominating the opening bells. A rush of early bids established a steady upward trend, maintaining the benchmark index firmly in positive territory for the first two hours of business.

However, the upward momentum completely stalled at midday. By 12:00 pm, market dynamics shifted sharply as sustained profit-taking pushed large-cap and mid-tier equities out of the green. This selling pressure escalated into a broad sell-off during the final trading hour, securing a notable decline for the session.

Segmented Market Performance Dissected

By the close of trading on the DSE, only 98 issues recorded capital gains. In contrast, the prices of 245 enterprises fell, while 49 counters concluded the session unchanged. An examination of the listed equities relative to their corporate dividend history reveals uneven vulnerability across distinct market segments:

• High-Yield Tiers (≥10% Dividend): Only 42 stocks managed to advance. Meanwhile, 138 blue-chip counters depreciated, and 16 closed flat.

• Medium-Tier Operations (<10% Dividend): This segment recorded a mere 13 gainers against 55 decliners, with 6 holding stationary.

• Non-Compliant Junk Shares (“Z” Group): Underperforming firms that failed to disburse dividends demonstrated surprising speculative resilience. Within this high-risk category, 42 counters moved upward, 52 lost ground, and 27 remained unchanged.

• Listed Mutual Funds: Closed-end funds enjoyed a relatively stable outing, with 20 advancing, 7 declining, and 7 remaining static.

Indices Retrench and Liquidity Contracts

The concentration of falling prices caused the DSE Broad Index (DSEX) to shed 44 points, settling at 5,855 points. The blue-chip segment experienced similar pressure, with the DSE-30 index—tracking thirty premier conglomerates—dropping 16 points to finish at 2,210 points. Reflecting the broader market weakness, the Shariah-compliant DSES index gave up 9 points, closing the day at 1,197 points.

This downturn was intensified by a notable reduction in liquidity flow. Daily turnover on the DSE fell to 10.70 billion Taka (equivalent to $1,070.39 crore), representing a contraction of 478.5 million Taka compared to the previous session’s total of 11.18 billion Taka.

Malek Spinning Mills led liquidity involvement, registering individual trading volumes worth 268.8 million Taka. Techno Drugs followed in second place with transactions totaling 247.2 million Taka, while Sharp Industries secured the third position by generating a turnover of 236.7 million Taka. Other heavily traded firms anchoring the top ten liquidity list included BSRM Steel, LankaBangla Finance, Meghna Insurance, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, ACI Formulations, Summit Alliance Port, and FarEast Knitting.

A matching bearish sentiment played out at the Chittagong Stock Exchange, where the CASPI All Share Price Index lost 66 points. Out of the 239 traded entities on the port city bourse, 76 advanced, 137 declined, and 26 held their previous value. Total turnover at the CSE plummeted to 88.2 million Taka, down sharply from the 183.8 million Taka recorded during the prior session.
