A police eviction drive in the Mirpur area of Dhaka descended into violence on Wednesday, leaving several officers injured and prompting authorities to identify and arrest suspects using video footage from the scene.
According to police, the incident occurred along the ECB–Kalshi Road when law enforcement personnel, accompanied by officials from the Public Works Department and led by an executive magistrate, carried out an operation to clear illegal settlements on government land. The area in question is reportedly part of the Bawnia embankment zone, where encroachment has led to the establishment of makeshift housing by residents over time.
As the eviction operation began around midday, tensions quickly escalated. Eyewitness accounts and video recordings show that some residents confronted the authorities, leading to a chaotic situation. Police officers were seen detaining several individuals during the operation, while others attempted to resist the clearance effort. The situation intensified further when groups of settlers allegedly launched a sudden attack on police and government officials, forcing officers to retreat from parts of the site.
Footage circulating from the scene also shows law enforcement attempting to regain control while removing detained individuals from the area. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are underway to identify those involved in the violence, with arrests being made based on verified video evidence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials stated that several officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. Deputy Commissioner Mostak Ahmed of the Mirpur Division confirmed that between five and six police personnel were hurt in the incident. However, no detailed information has yet been released regarding the severity of their injuries.
Officials have indicated that legal proceedings will be initiated against those responsible for attacking government personnel and obstructing official duties. Security in the area has since been reinforced to prevent further unrest and to continue the eviction process under tighter supervision.
