Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member and former adviser to the Prime Minister, Mirza Abbas, has shown significant improvement while undergoing treatment in Malaysia, according to party sources.
The information was confirmed on Monday night by BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan. He said that, following medical advice, Mirza Abbas has been permitted to meet relatives and close acquaintances for limited periods as part of his recovery process.
Shairul Kabir Khan also stated that family members are interested in bringing Mirza Abbas back to Bangladesh before the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. However, he emphasised that any decision regarding his return will depend entirely on the recommendations of the attending physicians and his overall medical condition.
Mirza Abbas fell seriously ill on 11 March while attending iftar. He was subsequently admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital, Dhaka. Following medical examinations, doctors performed brain surgery on him at the hospital. After the operation, he remained under close observation before further treatment arrangements were made abroad.
For advanced medical care, Mirza Abbas was first taken to Singapore. Later, he was transferred to Malaysia for specialised treatment and rehabilitation. He is currently continuing treatment there under medical supervision.
Party sources indicated that his physical condition has improved gradually in recent weeks. Doctors have reportedly advised continued rehabilitation and observation before any long-distance travel decision is finalised.
Mirza Abbas is one of the senior leaders of the BNP and has long been involved in Bangladesh’s national politics. Over the years, he has held important organisational and advisory responsibilities within the party. News of his illness prompted concern among party leaders and supporters, many of whom have continued to seek updates on his condition.
The following table summarises the sequence of events relating to his illness and treatment:
